Ayer – Freedom and Necessity We can’t blame the dice for the number on which they land. Responsibility: 1) It asks for our actions to be free. 2) It asks for some fundamental part of us to determine our actions. (Can’t be true at the same time) Dilemma: a situation where all options have negative outcomes. False dichotomy: when there seems to be only two choices, but that is not true. There is a third option. We are held responsible when our actions are either perceived as in character, or as indicative of our character. Freedom is opposed to constraint. Causal determination is necessary but not sufficient for constraint.
