CHEM 111L B-Labs

FALL 2020

Taylor-Perry

CHEM 111L – General Chemistry I Laboratory Credit: 1 Introduction to the principles and techniques of experimental chemistry with emphasis on formula investigations, equations, elementary statistics, and chemical reactivity. Co- or prerequisite: CHEM 111 TERM:

FALL 2020

MEETING TIME:

Please refer to your concise student schedule for specific meeting dates, times, and locations

COURSE DELIVERY:

(Sections other than J10) CHEM 111L is being taught in a hybrid delivery method. There are five in-person meetings listed on the student’s Concise Student Schedule during which synchronous face-to-face meetings are scheduled. There will also be asynchronous online activities to be completed in Blackboard. (Section J10) CHEM 111L is being taught in a 100% asynchronous online delivery method.

TEXT/MATERIALS:

The lab manual for this course is CHEMISTRY 111L Lab Manual by TaylorPerry, Reger, Goode, and Freeman. QDE Press. ISBN 9781938535338. You will also need a scientific calculator and must provide your own safety goggles or safety glasses. A computer with internet access will be required for completing online exercises and submissions.

INSTRUCTOR:

A teaching assistant will be assigned.

COORDINATOR:

Dr. Amy Taylor-Perry Office: STB 329 Office Hours: Virtual and by appointment Phone: 777-1540 E-mail: [email protected]

LEARNING OUTCOMES: The purpose of general chemistry lab is for students to understand the molecular nature of all phases of matter, to understand the various ways of depicting chemical compounds and chemical reactions, to develop an ability to solve basic quantitative problems regarding the properties of molecules, chemical equilibria, and chemical kinetics, and to develop the ability to appropriately apply this knowledge to general scientific problems in various fields of science and engineering. Upon successful completion of CHEM 111L, students should be able to:       

Assemble basic laboratory glassware. Perform fundamental laboratory techniques. (Carolina Core Scientific Literacy (CCSL) LO2) Make and record relevant experimental observations. (CCSL LO2) Interpret experimental results. (CCSL LO2) Quantitatively describe the properties of atoms and molecules in the various phases of pure matter and in mixtures. (CCSL LO1) Use dimensional analysis with proper attention to units and significant figures. (CCSL LO2) Name and classify inorganic compounds. (CCSL LO1)

Determine empirical and molecular formulas from empirical data. (CCSL LO2) Balance chemical equations and use stoichiometric relationships and the mole concept to calculate product and reactant amounts. (CCSL LO1, LO2) Identify different types of reactions (precipitation, neutralization, oxidation-reduction) and predict the outcome of these reactions. (CCSL LO1, LO2) Explain the first law of thermodynamics and the role of energy and enthalpy in chemical reactions and perform thermochemical calculations. (CCSL LO1, LO2) Explain the basic concepts of quantum theory, determining the electron configurations of atoms, and using periodic trends to make predictions about atomic properties. (CCSL LO1, LO2) Explain theories of chemical bonding and determine the molecular geometry of molecules using VSEPR theory. (CCSL LO1, LO2) Apply gas laws and kinetic molecular theory to processes involving gases. Explain the intermolecular attractive forces that determine the properties of the states of matter and phase behavior. (CCSL LO1)

ASSIGNMENTS: A grade for each experiment will be assigned as follows: 20% Pre-lab video views (ONLINE) Videos of the pre-lab discussion and experiments will be posted on Blackboard (Bb). Bb reports of video views will be used to assign video views credit. Each Pre-Lab Video will be worth 10 points, and each Experiment Video will be worth 10 points. 20% Pre-lab questions (ONLINE) The pre-lab questions are due before beginning the experiment videos. Pre-lab questions will be posted in Bb. Two attempts are allowed. Students should seek help from their TAs BEFORE making the second attempt. 20% Data Collection (IN-PERSON, ONLINE for Section J10) Grades for data collection will be determined based off of in-lab performance considering safety, technique, and participation. Students will collect data in person and take the data home to complete calculations for the data sheet. 20% Data Sheet (Submitted ONLINE upload) The lab results grade will be given for correct answers, and, depending on the lab, closer (numerical) answers will be given a higher grade. The way that points are distributed will depend on the lab. Calculations are completed at home, and an image (scan or picture) of the data sheet will be uploaded for submission in Bb. 20% Post-lab questions (ONLINE) Students are able to consult their book and ask their TA questions, but will not be given direct answers. Post-lab questions will be posted in Bb. Two attempts are allowed. Students should seek help from their TAs BEFORE making the second attempt. Lab 1 has no pre-lab exercise; these points are replaced by safety questions. Lab 12 is completed at home and points are re-distributed. A formal lab report (completed individually) written on Lab 5 (if Lab 5 is missed, use Lab 3) is worth 150 points (120 points Report, 30 points Revision). Information about writing the lab report will be posted to Bb. Ten lab experiments (Lab 12 plus Best 9 of: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, and 8) and safety quiz are worth 100 points each, and the lab report is worth 150 points (Report 120, Revision 30) for a total of 1250 points.
