2.2 PESTEL Political Factors The Singapore government puts in place many schemes and grants to help companies grow and improve their capabilities. These schemes include  

The Productivity and Innovation Credit (PIC) allows companies to claim up to 400 per cent in tax deductions or up to S$100,000 cash payout pear year. The Working Capital Loan allows SMEs to obtain loans of up to S$300,000

All these government efforts is in favour of the printing industry as it increases business capabilities to buy these printing services. Economic Factors In 2017, the economy expanded by 3.6%, an improvement from the 2.4% growth in 2016. Nominal GDP increased to $447.3 billion in 2017, as compared to $427.9 billion in 2016 (SingStat, 2017). Favourable economy supports growth of new businesses and thus new business formations in Singapore totalled 16,096 in Q1 2017, registering a 6.3% increase Quarter on Quarter (QoQ) and 1.2% Year on Year (YoY), according to Hawksford Singapore’s Singapore New Business Trends Report Q1 2017 (GuideMeSingapore, 2017). This increase pool of customers for the printing industry. Social Factors Technological Factors Discovery of new technology will drive the industry and create various differentiation for companies. New technologies include:  Nanographic printing  3D printing  Hybrid printing technologies For consecutive three years now, Singapore has been placed at the top at the latest Waseda-IAC International E-Government Ranking list as the world’s most tech savvy in the world (Nag, 2017). Hence with high technology levels in the country, it is favourable to the printing industry. Environmental Factors The industry is venturing into being environmentally efficient through reducing carbon emission, conserving energy usage and engaging in recycling. Green initiatives efforts can be seen throughout supply chain management and distribution channels.

Legal Factors Consumer protection laws, such as warranties, provide consumers the ability to take legal actions under some circumstances. Therefore, it is crucial that companies to take into account these laws when training staffs and not partake in unlawful acts, such as deceptive advertising and pricing.

4

Singapore's patent system will be stricter to better support innovators, in a move to promote innovation and further the country's economic growth (Salleh, 2017). Patents will enable companies in the printing industry to maintain exclusive competitive edges and this will drive up competitiveness. The Employment Act is Singapore’s main labour law. It provides for the basic terms and conditions at work for employees covered by the Act. The players in the industry have to abide by the country’s regulations.

Fuji Xerox adheres by a corporate “Zero Land Fill” policy, where all products that have ended their effective life cycle will no longer be land buried but stripped off all the plastic carcass and electronic components separately so that it can be then recycled internally and convert 98% of all the recyclable parts to form the renewed raw materials again for it to manufacture into the next generations of new products. Unifying paper and digital information and seamlessly integrating this with cloud services and mobile solutions largely reduces paper volume. Canon Utilising an automated production line for toner and ink cartridge.
