BALLET TERMS - QUIZ 1 1. Plie Plie - to “fold”, usually when a dancer bends at the knees 2. Releve - meaning “raised”. Describes when a dancer rises up and seemingly is standing “on their toes”

3.Tendu - to extend the leg straight out from the supporting leg with the foot fully pointed 4. Soutenu - meaning “sustained”. Describes a dancer turning in a sus-suos and ending up with the opposite foot in front.

5. Reverance - last exercise at the end of class to pay respect to the teacher (usually a curtsy or bow)

Degage -- to “disengage” (when a dancer moves their leg off the floor from a position with 6. Degage Degage a pointed foot and straight leg out to the front, side or back)

7. Temps leve - a sharp jump on either one foot or two 8. Changement -- to change with a jump (start in fifth and as you jump change feet so back foot is now in front)

9. Echappe - meaning “slipping movement” or “escaping”. Done with a dancer’s legs and feet, it is when one starts in 5th and slides feet out equally to 2nd or 4th position without lifting from the ground.

10. Ronds de jambe - meaning “round of leg” or “circular movements of the leg”. 11. Coupe -- cut or “cutting” (one foot cuts the other away, taking its place) 12. Retire - the position in which the dancer raises their thigh in the air with the knee bent so that the pointed foot is placed either in front, to the side or behind the supporting knee.

13. Passe - meaning “passed”. It is the movement that the dancer goes through during a retire position.

14. Grand Battement - “large battement” “large beating”. Performed by throwing the working leg in the air and bringing it back down to a position....
