-Assess patient’s level of social support. Social support is one of the determinants of the client’s recovery and emotional health. -Assess family/caregiver level of acceptance of the client’s body changes -Encourage clients to discuss concerns related to sexuality and provide support or information as indicated. Many conditions that affect body image also affect sexuality. -Teach all aspects of care. Involve clients and caregivers in self care as soon as possible. Do this in stages if clients still have difficulty looking at or touching body part. -Advise patients with a stoma about the support available to them.

Confusion in mental picture of one’s physical self. This is sometimes due to: -Lack of body part; alteration in body function -Alteration in body structure -Alteration in the view of one’s body -Alteration in body function -Alteration in selfperception -Cultural/spiritual congruence -Illness/trauma/surgical proceedure/treatment regimen -Impaired psychosocial functioning
-Incorporate psychosocial questions related to body iage as part of nursing assessment to identify clients at risk for body image disturbance. -Be aware of the impact of of treatments and sugeries that involve the face and neck and be prepared to address the patient’s psychosocial needs. - Consideration should be given to providing counseling for women with breast cancer to assist with acceptance of the reality of the disease and to increase their resilience against breast surgery. -Maintain understanding that age, gender, and other demographic identifiersmay be associated with higher degrees of body image disturbance. -Acknowledge that body image disturbances can affect all individuals regardless of culture, race, or ethnicity. Assess for the influence of cultural beliefs, regional norms, and values on the client’s body image.
