Longways Set - Set made up of lines of men facing their partners in a Long Set. 2. Duple-Minor Set -A progressive longways set in units of two couples. Ones remain ones to the bottom while twos remain twos to the top when each has a turn out before changing numbers and returning along the set having changed numbers. 3. Triple-Minor -A progressive longways set in units of three couples. First couple progresses down the set one place and keep their number to the bottom. The other two couples alternate between two and three and move up to the top of the set. 4. Beckett Formation -A progressive longways set but men with their partners by their right side facing another similar couple across the set. Progression is along the side of the set. 5. Long Sets- 3, 4, 5 or more couples dance in a long set. 6. Double Circle- Face partners with men on inside and ladies on outside. 7. Sicilian Circle -Couple facing couple in a large circle around the room. 8. Double Sicilian Circle -Two couples’ side-by-side facing two couples’ side by side and forming a circle around the room.

Square -Four couples forming sides of square and numbered anticlockwise starting with the couple that has their backs to the caller. -Head couples are numbers 1 and 3. -Side couples are numbers 2 and 4. Elements of movement Space: 1. Direction—is the line of movement taken which maybe forward, backward, sideward, diagonal, upward, or a combination of those mentioned. 2. Level—is movement through space that maybe done at a high, low, or medium level. 3. Range—refers to the area covered as the body moves. It maybe small as when the movement is done in one’s place; or large when movement covers a wide area as when getting away from one’s place. 4. Floor Pattern—the path or design that is made while moving in space is what is termed as floor pattern. It may take a form of a circle, square, straight line or zigzag. Movement Qualities: Movement expression is attained through the elements of time, force and space. Time qualities: 1. Movements which is fast Examples: galloping horse, Jet plane 2. Movement which is slow Examples: turtle, Flower growing Force Qualities: 2. Soft light movement Examples: Fairies, Birds and butterflies 3. Strong, heavy movement Examples: Elephant, Bulldozer 4. Strong, jerky movement Examples: Frog, A jumping jack 5. Smooth, sustained movement Examples: Airplane Fish swimming

Space Qualities: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Factors Affecting Folk Dances 1. Geographical location 2. Economic conditions 3. Climatic conditions 4. Customs and traditions. Do’s in Folk Dancing 1. Dance in a natural, simple and direct manner. 2. Dance with ease and smoothness. 3. Use the proper costume for the dance. 4. Follow directions and dance instructions as closely as possible. 5. Dance with feeling and expression. Don’ts’s in Folk Dancing 1. Do not exaggerate the dance steps. 2. Do not make the dances too dainty and graceful like ballet. 3. Don’t make entrance and exit long. 4. Don’t make steps too elaborate and complicated. 5. Don’t call a dance a folk dance unless steps come from traditional dances.

LEARNING ACTIVITY

Choose 3 steps each in 2/4, ¾, and 4/4 and apply 2 elements of movement space and 2 in movement qualities in each time signature and video yourself doing it, but first create an outline before doing it. *you can add some music if you want to. For example: Time Signature 2/4
