Description

Dr. Chun Psychology 100 October 9th, 2017 Behavioral Explanation #1 Behavior Observation/Description On both sides of my family, we are all encouraged to pursue some sort of athletic, artistic, or creative hobby unrelated to our school subjects and careers. My Grandfather played trumpet and was in USC’s marching band. My Grandmother is an Opera devotee, although she does not sing herself. My parents, aunts, and uncle were all offered music lessons; and did some as children but chose to not continue. I was drawn to music from the time I went to Music Together classes with my mother at the age of three. I developed an extensive knowledge of folk and children’s songs, and made up my own. At eight, I began taking group violin lessons at school. The program wasn’t very good, but I enjoyed the lessons and returned the next year. I did orchestra all three years of middle school, took private lessons, and auditioned into Long Beach Polytechnic High School’s Symphony Orchestra as a freshman. I switched to cello at the end of the year, and have played it ever since. I currently participate in Orchestra at CSULB, and plan to continue as an adult.

Concept Identification

This an example of nature versus nurture. Differences in behaviors relate to both (Kalat, p. 6). Nature can be defined as heredity: the degree to which differences are a result genes inherited and expressed from one’s parent. Nurture includes differences in the environment, as well as the people one is raised by and spends their time with.

Explanation I personally inherited an interest in music from my grandfather, an example of nature. The nurture aspect of my musical interest is based on the fact that I began music lessons at a young age and my parents encouraged me to continue as I got older. However, in general, music appreciation in my family is limited. My grandparents did not have children who continue with music; the interest seems to have skipped a generation. A possible reason my parents did not continue with music is that they were not interested in progressing because they did not have a talent for it. They were and still are interested in other hobbies....
