Topic 3. Sensation and perception Task A. MCT: Read make study notes on the following five learning objectives. 1. How do humans sense the environment? Explain the process of transduction and link it to coding for intensity and quality of the stimulus. 2. What are absolute thresholds? Using Signal Detection Theory, explain why our sensitivity to sensations varies over the day [eg sensory adaptation]. 3. Explain how light wavelengths are transformed in vision and the perception of colour. Include the Young-Helmholtz theory [retinal transduction of colour] and Hering’s opponent process theory [processing colour in the brain]. 4. Explain the difference between the sensation of pain and the perception of pain. 5. How is perception organized (see Gestalt) and how do humans perceive depth? Finally, explain how cultural experiences influence perception.
