Topic 5: Cultural Values Worksheet Understanding and examining values specific to various cultures or sub-groups can enhance the delivery of behavioral health services. Students must learn about the values of different groups to improve their ability to provide quality services to diverse populations in their role as paraprofessionals. Directions: In the table below, identify three specific cultural values attributed to each of the cultural groups listed. In the far right column, explain how knowledge of these values may influence how behavioral health services could be best provided to individuals in each cultural group. Use a minimum of two scholarly resources, which may include your textbook, to support your explanation. Cultural Group

How can knowledge of these values influence provision of behavioral health services to individuals in each cultural group? (Each response should be 50 to 100 words.) By knowing the cultural background of African Americans, a counselor can better create treatment plans, locate diverse organizations, and/or treatment facilities that can recognize and help the client through any cultural differences he or she may experience. Furthermore, having an extensive knowledge of the history of slavery, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Black Power/Black Arts Movement and how it affected the history of African Americans can be beneficial to behavioral treatment (Huntsville-Madison County Public Library, 2018). Arab Americans have a deep regard for religion, family, food, heritage, and time (Arab America, 2018). Knowing the value an Arab American place on each of the values in their cultural can help a paraprofessional be able to find the right services for the client that would be valuable to his or her culture. differences when it comes to their ethnic backgrounds but family cohesion and responsibility, self-control and personal discipline, and reverence for the elderly seem to be some of the attributes the Asian American culture holds dear (JRank - The Marriage and Family Encyclopedia, 2020). Understanding the Asian American culture background can help any paraprofessional provide the services their culture will accept. Latino/a American’s have a strong cultural history when it comes to their religion, beliefs, putting family first, and then the popularity of their cuisine (InterExchange, 2020). Having a better understanding of a Latino/a American’s culture can aid the counselor where he or she can seek out the correct behavioral benefits that coincide with their cultural background.
