Description

When?: Before the start of your  Session A (actual date depends on your schedule). Why?: As a beginning university student, you quite likely "study" in ways that could be more effective at promoting deep learning. You are unlikely to achieve your desired level of academic success unless you are thoughtful about how help yourself learn well. This exercise raises awareness of research-based strategies that you can use to raise your grades in all courses. For example, reflection on course content is one such strategy for encouraging deeper thinking and more durable learning. How?: i) Download and read the essay by Leamson from the link below. ii) Make a list of the learning strategies suggested by Leamson that you have already used in your educational experiences. iii) Write a brief reflection as a response to the following questions: Which new learning strategies do you think you are most likely to adopt this term at Western? What does this choice of strategies reveal about how your approach to learning in university is likely to change relative to high school? iv) Copy and paste your assignment (Do not upload a file.) Proof read and check the grading criteria below. Submit.

Criteria

Level 1: Pass must meet all i) Written Reflection including List of Strategies and  evidence of self-awareness in response to prompt questions. of these criteria. ii) Standard sentence structure and punctuation. iii) 100 to 250 words v) Submitted as OWL Assignment SA1.2 before start of your Session A. 0

Learning strategies that I have already used suggested by Leamson are: I attended class regularly. I had a study group. I would always use assignments as review material.

I have learned several new strategies from Leamson but I think the ones that I will adapt this year are; building curiosity, note taking method, verbalization and most importantly having a goodnight sleep before exam. The most intriguing strategy I learned in this essay was building interest since many times I make the excuse of not being interested in a course or topic and I would not do well in the course. Secondly, the note making method while listening to a lecture would be a great tool for this term. I have always struggled with finding the best way to take notes during high school, as I would just copy the slides or write down whatever the teacher was saying regardless of its importance in the course. Furthermore, the idea of verbalization will help me during university, as throughout my high school, I would study in the library and try to remember things by just reading them over and over again. Last but not least, having a good night sleep before exam or test, since in my high school days I would always sleep less or stay up all night as I thought sleeping would waste my time and if I fall asleep I would forget things but realizing that there is a increase in the ability to recall or reconstruct when learning is followed by sleep.

Joe is a first year student and she failed her first mid-term so to get help she goes to her TA for advice. After reading Leasom's essay, what do you think the TA suggested to her to prepare for the next exam?
