BMS WK10 Health promotion Social model of Health: Downstream, midstream and upstream interventions: Downstream factors: biological factors at micro level, including treatment systems, disease management, investment in clinical research. MCQ qn: primary prevention Disease prevention (downstream) = healthy protection – focus on healthy disease free populations (through vaccinations) Secondary prevention – for populations already at risk – early diagnosis (cancer screening) Tertiary prevention = treatment and management of people with people with disease - Pharmaceutical benefits scheme - Midstream factors: behavioural factors intermediate level including lifestyle, behavioural and individual prevention. - Upstream factors: social factors at the macro level including government policies, population health, healthy environments Communication strategies: - Advertisements (online, tv, magazines, posters) Health, education & empowerment: How to empower populations to have the knoweldge to make better choices; eg in family violence, there’s education in schools and workplaces to promote good rs and well being Community & health development: Community development & engagement o Hairdressers are being trained to minister to women undergoing family violence as women go to hairdressers Capacity building Working with communities not for communities Creating partnerships and advocacy o How to design programs to help the community. You work with them not for them. o Protesting cannot be the only avenue, you have to have solutions Infrastructure and systems change: Taxation: tobacco and sugar Legislation and policy: Gun control, seat belt, smoke free public places, advertising bans & restrictions - Many people were killed in tasmania in port arthur. John howard did a gun reform in australia. Within 3 weeks they got rid of guns.
Urban planning: green spaces Organisational change: advocacy around gender diversity within workplaces Linear regression: - Use scatterplot - Categorical – binary - Did the outcome occur yes/no - Exposure can be categorical or continuous - Primary aim of logistic regression is to obtain odds ratio -
Step 1: univariable logistic regression Step 2: multivariable logistic regression Ways to evaluate a logistic regression model: - Measure of model calibration - Approximated by the pearson’s chi-square statistic - Compares observed and expected frequencies of outcome across deciles of risk Interpreting chi square value: - a low chi square value = high p-value > 0.05. model fits data well - a high chi square value = low p-value 1: factor increases risk of event - HR< 1: factor decreases risk of event (protective)...
