This assignment should be submitted as a document attachment through Canvas. Please note that points will be deducted for spelling and grammatical errors, as well failure to meet word minimums. Each question is worth 25 points, resulting in a total of 100 available points for this assignment.

1. List one way in which Didier Pittet’s personality or approach in promoting hand hygiene practices angered healthcare workers or managers within healthcare facilities. Explain an example of how this created an additional barrier to overcome. (Word minimum: 200 words). -

One way in which Didier Pittet’s personality or approach in promoting hand hygiene may angered healthcare workers was the fact that he wanted to implement the use of alcohol in hand washing as an alternative to waking hands. Pittet wanted to implement this as an alternative because he went to an Intensive care Unit and while observing he noticed that the nurses washed their hands about twenty two times within the space of an hour. Each time the nurses washed they would spend approximately two minute which means forty four minute out of every hour is used to wash hands. I believe he thought this was ridiculous as though hand washing is important in healthcare, most of the time should be spent taking after patients. Also, with all that hand washing, he noticed many nurses' skin started to get dry. Since he knew alcohol was a very good antiseptic solution, he thought implementing alcohol based solution, the cleaning of hands would be faster but still safe and very effective. Though it was a good idea, it made health care workers upset as alcohol is a little strong on the skin and the constant use of it causes irritation for some people along with the fact that some people come to the hospitals because of alcohol based problems. This created an additional barrier to overcome because if healthcare workers are uncomfortable with a certain method then they are less likely to use such methods. This may also cause conflict in the work environment as there may be some people who believe that Pittet’s method should be used while others may disagree and they might focus less on patient outcomes and more on what method is better to use and also which would be more safe for younger patterns such as toddlers.

2. Why did Didier Pittet and the industries/manufacturers of hand hygiene products disagree? What actions from Didier Pittet upset the industry? (Word minimum: 100 words)

-

Pittet and the industries of hand hygiene companies disagreed because he criticized them in an article published in the Lancet about the gels they were sending out in Great Britain. Also Pittet believes that they were also selling the alcohol based solution way too expensive in some places versus others and he does not think the solutions will be as effective as a preventive method to infection and other health care issues if they are too expensive as some places won't be able to properly afford them. He suggested that places make their solutions locally so that industries and manufacturers wont get to profit too much at the expense of sick people. He found a cheap and effective formula so that good hygiene could be available without the high pricing . These actions made the industries very upset.

3. Provide one way in which Didier Pittet’s hand hygiene campaign was ineffective or in which the approach had to be adjusted. Could this have been avoided? If so, how? (Word minimum: 150 words). - Since the solution was alcohol based, one way in which Didier Pittet’s hand hygiene campaign was ineffective was the fact that they did not know how to properly distribute it as they first tried using clips suggested by a biker nurse. However, some nurses started having accidents with them and it got to the point when the solutions were falling and creating stains on the floors around the hospital. This made it a bit ineffective as it would force hospitals to start using alcohol resistant coating on the floor. This still would not come close to fixing the problem as the solution also spilled very easily creating messes all around. I believe all of this could have been avoided if they had spent a little more time with the planning. The product could have been one the spills less if more research was done before distribution. Also, they could have done a little more thinking on how to send the product around hassle free. Similar to something like a hand sanitizer dispenser when the product is the same and does not risk falling on the floor and making a mess. 4. What were the successes of Didier Pittet’s efforts? What goals or objectives remain for the future? (Word minimum: 150 words) -

Successes of Didier Pittet’s effort was the fact that an alcohol based handgun was created that aided in proper hand hygiene at a decent and affordable price for all. Many lives were saved annually across the globe because of this and many infections that spread easier in hospital settings due to bad hand hygiene were eliminated as alcohol was a great antiseptic just as predicted. Since the implementation of alcohol based gels, nurses and healthcare workers spent less time washing their hands, therefore more attention was given to patients with even cleaner hands, leading to better care and better hospital outcomes. This was also beneficial to health care facilities as they were able to provide good services with good hygiene at a reasonable price to all patients. In regards to the

future, Pittet’s objective is for the practice of good hand hygiene to become a norm for everyone globally and for health care workers to continue the practice and eventually give even better care....
