BS Sport Internship Info (Info for Academic Credit Internships)

Pre-Requisites/Requirements for internship courses?  Completed at least 60 credits  Completed 3 sport courses  2.5 GPA or higher Will I earn credit for an internship? Most students can earn 3 credits, per course, for their internship upon successful completion of the internship hours and internship course. In order to earn credits, your internship must be at least 150 hours per course (300 hours to fulfill both course requirements) and be approved by our department before you begin. 

For BS Sport students, you have 2 required internship courses (SPT-491 & SPT-492) for a total of 6 credits (3 credits per course)

How much time do I need to spend working at the internship? There are 2 options for fulfilling the requirements of each course: 1. You do one 300 hour internship that fulfills both internship courses  This is the most common option as sport internships tend to be longer than 1 of our terms 2. You do two separate 150 hours internships that fulfill each course separately These hours can be completed according to any schedule that works for both you and the internship site (evening and weekend hours are fine). All hours must be completed within the start and end date that was approved by our department for your internship. How long does the internship need to be? Your internship start and end dates should coincide with the term start and end dates. Exception: Sport Management internships can sometimes have flexibility but please work with me if you think the dates will be different. Most of the time the end date must be within 30 days after a term end (and you must get prior approval by us to do this). Start dates are often more flexible, but again, work with me on this as it is often case by case. What does the internship supervisor need to do? The internship supervisor needs to work with you to develop a schedule and role that will contribute to your learning objectives. learn about a profession and to practice implementing knowledge learned in the classroom. The supervisor should provide duties and a setting in which this will be possible and should guarantee that you will have close supervision. The internship supervisor will also need to communicate with the instructor of your internship course on a bi-weekly basis for check-ins, as well as provide an end of internship evaluation on your performance. Does an internship have to be paid? Internships that are for academic credit do not have to be paid, but there is no rule that says they can’t be paid. Each individual internship is different. Can I do an internship anywhere I want? Internships must be at sites that provide you with ample supervision and opportunities to achieve your learning objectives. Internships can NOT be:  Supervised by a family member  Doing a job for which you are already paid  Unsupervised work  Unrelated to your major, minor, or professional goals What activities do I need to complete as part of the internship? There is not a list of specific activities that you must complete, since each internship will be unique. The more closely your internship aligns with your degree program the better (and the internship itself must relate to sport management/athletics). We do not want our interns to just be getting coffee/lunch, filing paperwork, stapling documents, etc. The internship needs to be a learning experience that directly ties with your degree program. Think about applying theories from sport courses you have taken, including areas of personal skill development, and exploring activities that will help you towards your career goals. Coming up with these activities should be a combined effort between you and your site/internship supervisor to determine what you are hoping to learn about, and what they are able to teach/show you. What is the Pre-Internship Seminar (PINS)? The PINS is an overview of internship policies and procedures. It is all done online, on your own time, and should be completed as soon as you have an interest in doing an internship. The PINS is the mandatory first step for all students wanting to do an internship. Link to the PINS if you have not already done them: https://snhu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_41qn8LZJpqYKJvv

Once I have landed an internship, how do I get it approved? Please let your Internship Administrator know that you have a site and they will get you started in the approval process. You will need to provide detailed information about your experience, site supervisor, and goals you have for yourself during this internship that relate to your major. Contact [email protected] if you are unsure of your specific Internship Administrator’s contact information. Once we receive your experience request, we will work with the Dean of your program to get it approved. Once approved, you and your Academic Advisor will be notified so that you can get registered for the internship course. An internship approval request should be submitted 5-6 weeks before the term your internship will begin in. If this is not possible, please reach out to your Internship Administrator to see if there is still time to have it approved.
