This course addresses the fundamental aspects of information technology that drive our businesses and lives alike. The course does NOT deal with new technologies and innovations but rather with the primary principles and components they are built upon. Some of the concepts the course deals with includes software, hardware, tele-communications, the Internet, ethics in IT, security, and personal productivity. The course will strengthen your fundamental knowledge related to IT and its various aspects and will prepare you not only for courses to come but also for today's industry expectations. The course entails fundamental subject matter: How information is stored in computers; how the internet works; issues related to security and safety of your data; ethics related to IT usage; social issues resulting from today’s information technologies, and business productivity. As such, and in specific, the course does not deal, for example, with versions of operating systems, or state-of-the art technologies and social media, but focuses on the basic knowledge that all IT is built on and its use for business productivity. This course is designed to provide you with the opportunity to deal with information technology from different perspectives and focuses on practice rather than theory. To that effect, you are required to be an active participant by engaging in a number of interactive activities and applied assignments. As an online course, time management becomes the critical to complete all requirement (assignments, activities, and tests) on time. The format provides an opportunity to further develop your self-directed learning skills and time management, encompassing up to 40 hours of expected interactive experience with online learning tools. Page 3|9
2. Quizzes 1-7: Throughout the semester, you will have a quiz for each unit. You will be able to access the quizzes with the units listed. The current course outline shows the deadlines at which you should complete the quizzes. Please take note of the both the opening and closing dates of the quizzes. The quiz grades will be released at the end of the semester along with all the answers. 3. Assignments 1-3: You need to complete three assignments during the semester. Basically, you have one assignment to do per month. The detailed requirements of these assignments are available in their associated modules and the assessment section at eConcordia. 4. Discussion Cases 1-5: You need to post 5 discussions. Basically, you have one discussion case to do per 2 weeks. The detailed requirements of these discussions will be found in the forum. You must participate in all the discussions in the forum to get full Marks. There will be 5 cases posted by the professor. You must post your response to each case with approximately 500 words (+- 100 words) in the discussion section for each case. Your response should engage with the teacher’s case and provide your personal thoughts/understanding. The case discussions are a versatile learning method in an online course. It is akin to putting your hand up in class, but with a bonus: each and every student can read the comments, questions, and the various answers posted, at their leisure. To earn your marks on “Case Discussion”, each student is expected to contribute to the discussion on cases. This can be done by contributing relevant material-related comments or questions, by answering others’ questions, by adding to other’s comments, by providing counter-arguments, real-life example, and the like. In addition, make sure that you refer to relevant chapters in the book to not only strengthen your argument and feedback but to process the content in the book for better understanding the concepts. Guidelines for Posting:
•
Do not post your telephone number, student ID, or any other personal information on the discussion board.
•
Read the other postings to confirm that a question has not already been answered repeatedly. Repetitive postings will not earn marks.
•
The Discussion Board (Forum) is meant for the academic discussion of the course material. Keep postings pertinent to the course material and subject matter at hand. Questions pertaining to grades or questions of a personal nature must be addressed directly to your TA via the BTM200 e-mail. Posts of this nature will be removed.
•
Of vital importance is respectful behavior on the discussion board. Refrain from making offensive statements and derogatory comments. For example, students must never insult another person or teaching assistant in a discussion.
•
Students who fail to respect these rules will get zero mark for “Case Discussions” and will be asked to leave the discussion. It is within our discretion and authority to edit or remove any posting at any time. Please see the http://www.concordia.ca/students/rights.html
7. Mini Case: • Accessed from eConcordia website. • Further instructions will be released via the econcordia announcements section. • You will be presented with an ill-defined business problem.
