To$develop$an$understanding$of$how$organizations$manage$demand$for$their$ goods$or$services,$and$how$they$work$to$integrate$their$ability$to$supply$with$ demand$in$their$marketplace.$ To$develop$an$understanding$of$a$typical$customer-value-oriented$organization’s$ vision,$goals$and$problems.$ To$develop$an$understanding$of$the$role$of$each$component$of$the$marketing$mix$ in$achieving$an$organization’s$goals$as$it$manages$demand$for$its$products$or$ services$in$a$constantly$changing,$globally$competitive$environment.$

Speaking$of$PowerPoint$slides,$I$will$post$PowerPoint$slides$on$Canvas.$$However,$when$you$ look$at$these$PowerPoint$slides$you$will$find$simply$an$outline$of$the$topics$that$will$be$ discussed$in$class.$$The$PowerPoints$that$I$use$in$class$will$be$far$more$detailed$than$those$ that$will$be$posted.$$Therefore,$you$will$need$to$take$notes.$$This$is$another$way$to$ encourage$class$attendance.$$If$you$rely$on$the$posted$PowerPoint$slides$to$study$for$exams,$ you$will$be$in$considerable$difficulty.$ !

It’s$also$very$important$that$you$read$the$textbook,$and$to$read$the$assigned$material$PRIOR! TO!CLASS.$$I$don’t$feel$it$is$my$job$to$regurgitate$everything$that$is$in$the$textbook.$$Rather,$ it$is$my$job$to$explain$concepts$that$might$need$additional$explanation$and$to$highlight$ areas$that$are$particularly$important.$$To!encourage!you!to!read!the!textbook!carefully,! 2

Exams$will$consist$of$multiple-choice$questions.$$Four$exams$will$be$given,$each!worth! 21.25%$of$your$final$grade.$$The$first$three$exams$will$occur$on$regularly$scheduled$class$ days.$$The!fourth!exam!will!be!given!during!the!final!exam!period,!but!it!will!not!be! cumulative,!and!will!cover!the!final!¼!of!the!course!material.!!Exams$are$mandatory$ and$will$be$administered$through$Canvas$using$Respondus$Lockdown$Browser$with$ Monitor.$$This$means$you$will$need$to$have$a$laptop$computer$with$a$working$microphone$ and$webcam.$$You$will$have$12$hours$during$which$to$commence$and$complete$the$exam$ (from$8:00$a.m.$until$8:00$p.m.$on$the$scheduled$exam$day);$once$commenced,$you$will$have$ 50$minutes$to$complete$it.$$Each$of$these$exams$is$worth$21.25%$of$your$final$grade.! ! For$any$of$the$4$scheduled$exams,$if$there$are$any$circumstances$that$will$prevent$you$from$ taking$the$exam$during$the$allotted$period$YOU$MUST$inform$me$PRIOR$TO$THE$ SCHEDULED$EXAM$PERIOD.$If$you$do$not$take$any$one$of$the$exams$during$the$assigned$ period$without$prior$notification$and$approval,$you$will$receive$a$zero$for$that$exam.$$Since! there!are!12!hours!during!which!you!may!complete!the!exam,!I!do!not!expect!that! there!will!be!many!–!if!any!-!legitimate!reasons!to!reschedule.! $

* Clicker*Questions* I$have$chosen$to$incorporate$clicker$technology$into$our$class.$The$clicker$questions$are$not$ designed$to$be$“easy$points.”$$Most$will$be$challenging$questions,$which$have$right$and$ wrong$answers,$not$just$questions$to$see$if$you$are$in$attendance$and$awake.$$If$you$answer$ the$question$correctly,$you$will$get$credit.$$If$you$answer$the$question$incorrectly,$you$will$ not$get$credit.$$I$do$realize$that$there$are$sometimes$technical$issues$with$clickers,$so$I$am$ building$a$15%$buffer$into$the$grade$calculation.$$Here’s$how$it$will$work.$$Let’s$say$there$ ends$up$being$100$clicker$questions$throughout$the$semester$(I$don’t$know$what$the$actual$ number$of$questions$will$be,$this$is$just$an$example).$$And$let’s$say$that$a$student$receives$ credit$for$correctly$answering$80$of$those$100$questions.$$As$a$“buffer,”$I$will$reduce$the$ number$of$questions$“counted”$for$the$grade$calculation$by$15%,$so$the$student’s$clicker$ score$will$be$80$out$of$85,$or$94%.$$$The$maximum$semester$score$for$clicker$questions$will$ be$100%.$$$This!15%!buffer!is!designed!to!accommodate!any!technical!glitches,!and!to! 3

give!you!a!little!leeway!if!you!need!to!miss!a!class!or!two!due!to!illness!or!other! problems.!!Beyond!this!15%!buffer,!if!you’re!not!in!class,!FOR!ANY!REASON,!or!if!you! forget!to!bring!your!clicker,!those!are!just!lost!clicker!points.$$$ $ Please$note$that$students$have$in$the$past$been$observed$bringing$multiple$clickers$to$class,$ and$“covering”$for$their$friends.$$Any$student$who$is$observed$with$multiple$clickers$(and$ we’ll$be$watching)$will$be$guilty$of$an$Honors$Code$infraction,$and$will$receive$a$zero$for$the$ clicker$portion$of$the$class$grade.$$The$student(s)$whose$clicker$is$being$used$ inappropriately$will$also$be$guilty$of$an$Honors$Code$infraction,$and$will$also$receive$a$zero$ for$the$clicker$portion$of$the$class$grade.$$In$other$words,$if$you$are$observed$clicking$for$ someone$else,$both$you$and$the$“someone$else”$will$immediately$lose$10%$of$your$class$ grade.$$Both$students$will$also$be$reported$to$the$Office$of$Student$Conduct,$and$the$incident$ will$become$a$part$of$their$records.$$$

* Research*Participation* A$core$aspect$of$marketing$is$conducting$research.$To$enhance$your$understanding$of$the$ marketing$research$process,$you$are$invited$to$participate$in$academic$research$sessions$ during$the$semester$that$account$for$5%$of$your$overall$course$grade.$You$will$need$to$ participate$in$4$30-minute$sessions$to$earn$full$credit.$Partial$credit$will$be$awarded$for$ each$individual$session$you$attend.$$Alternatively,$you$may$complete$a$research$article$ summary$to$fulfill$your$research$participation$requirement.$Complete$guidelines$for$the$ research$participation$portion$of$your$grade$are$available$in$the$syllabus$insert$document.$ $ Please$direct$all$questions$regarding$research$participation$to$mrlab@utk.edu
