Course Syllabus: Bus 227 W’22 – others by prior appointment – so as not to disappoint you. But I have an “open door policy”, and you can take a chance anytime on any working day.

Prerequisite

Bus 120, (Bus 160 or CIS 110), (Bus 144, or Bus 145), Bus 249 (formerly Bus 149 and Bus 162), Bus 100, and CMNS 125. Students without Bus 100 & Bus120 and those with low proficiency in English may find this course difficult. Anyone that is not involved, & not ready to work hard & learn, will find this course tough.

Course Overview

Calendar Description: A comprehensive course in how to establish a small business. Topics include buying a business, franchises, starting your own business, sources of financing, forms of business, determining location, and the management strategies of marketing, finance, production, inventory control, and human resources. This course concludes with the development of a business plan. Issues of new business growth, transfer of ownership / succession planning, tax, and forms of business ownership. This course concludes with identification of major business creators in the area and the development of a business plan for a business idea championed by student group.

Textbook companion website for text – and any readings and experiences from the real world. May like to refer to – Canadian Entrepreneurship and Small Business, by Balderson, D.W. (current edition, publisher: McGraw-Hill Ryerson). 50 odd Indian entrepreneurs and business empires they created (a binder (2 copies) put in student lounge by this professor). Students are advised to research history, backgrounds, motivations of emerging new business creators / start-ups. Textbook companion website for text– and any readings and experiences from the real world. Read articles in news as regards entrepreneurs & new business developers. Two binders on major Indian Business Families and businesses they developed – placed in student lounge. You are advised to look them up and update.

Course Syllabus: Bus 227 W’22 Project Report or the whole team will suffer a penalty of 50% This professor reserves the right to award an overall “Failed” grade to any student suspected of unethical / conduct unbecoming of a management professional on ANY assignment or in any sphere of class / academic activity. Professional conduct backed by thorough preparation for each class coupled with intense interest in every aspect of New Business Development effort as impacting a new business venture is expected of each student that elects to be in this class. All submissions MUST have TOC, Acknowledgement, and Certificate of Originality (must have the four-fold declarations – Have used my words only, Have not Copied from any source, Have not plagiarised, Have cited all sources from where adapted or quoted in this submission. Without this declaration – the submission will not receive any marks.
