Chinese is a tonal language. This means that the same sounds, pronounced with different tones, can refer to different things. (Wǒ jiào...) - My name is ... 你姓什么?(Nǐ xìng shén me?) - What's your surname? 我姓...(Wǒ xìng...) - My surname is ... 什么 / shén me – what 名字 /míng zi - first name 你叫什么名字 / Nǐ jiào shén me míng zi? - What's your name?

In China, surnames always come before first names. It is also considered polite and respectful to address people with their surname, followed by their title "Xiānshēng" (Mr) or "Nǚshì" (Ms). People only use first names amongst family and friends. 林女士 (Lín nǚshì) - Ms. Lin 王先生 (Wáng xiānshēng) - Mr. Wang 我叫... Wǒ jiào... My name is... 你姓什么?Nǐ xìng shén me? What's your surname? 我姓... In China, there are about 100 common surnames (姓 xìng), which are shared by 85% of the population. The three most common surnames in mainland China are Li, Wang and Zhang. Chinese women do not normally change their surnames when they get married....
