Task 1- C367 Part A: “Dental Health Lesson Plan - Super Smiles Checklist” A1. a: Effectiveness Anticipatory Set- The anticipatory set of the “Super Smiles Checklist” dental health lesson plan is not effective. The lesson states in the activity section that they will “first research dental health.” Not only is this statement too vague for a competent lesson plan but it also does not fulfill the purpose of an anticipatory set. The anticipatory set should be interesting for the students and activate prior knowledge while pulling them in so that they are engaged and eager to learn about the topic. Simply “researching dental health” is not going to draw in students at a 3rd to 5th grade level and might even be considered boring or redundant to students at this age who already probably have a decent understanding of dental health and the importance of brushing their teeth. Presentation procedures for new information- The presentation procedure for new information in this lesson plan is effective if the extension part of the lesson plan is included. Learning new information about dental hygiene from a dentist or dental hygienist with first-hand experience would be interesting for students and they would probably take the information more seriously. Students would also have the opportunity to ask questions and get answers from a qualified professional who has seen the damage that can come from not properly brushing your teeth and what cavities do to your teeth. Having a person with experience come into the classroom is a great way to engage students and change up the atmosphere of the classroom. If the extension of having a dental professional come to the class to present information is not included and just “researching dental health” is how information is relayed to the class then the lesson plan is not effective as this would not fully engage the students. Guided Practice- The dental health lesson plan does not sufficiently include guided practice. The lesson goes right from the anticipatory set of researching dental health to independent practice as the students are going to come up with reasons on their own of why it is important to brush your teeth. Guided practice is skipped. Independent Student Practice- The independent practice of the dental health lesson plan is effective. Students will independently come up with 5 reasons it is important to brush their teeth and make a list. Students will also then create a checklist that serves as a reminder for them to brush their teeth every day. The lesson plan does give the students the opportunity to complete two independent practices during the lesson. Closing Procedure- The closing activity of the lesson plan is effective. The students are going to create a checklist or chart reminder to brush their teeth everyday that they can take home and put in their bathrooms if they choose. This closing activity urges students to go home and start a conversation about dental health with their parents which will help students have a

deeper connection with the material learned. Students will more likely incorporate what they have learned into their daily life which is the goal of the lesson. b. Differentiation The dental health lesson plan is void of any differentiation models. The lesson is vague and unclear in its first activity of “researching dental health” but it can be assumed from the materials section of the lesson that the class will research together on personal laptops and the teacher will also with their laptop screen being projected. It does not account for the potential of any visual impairments as students may not be able to see the projection clearly. It also does not account for the possibility of any students with ADHD who may find it difficult to stay on task while using a personal laptop with internet access. There is no mention of differentiation in any way for this lesson. c. Standards Alignment Standard 1: Comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health. The standard aligns with the lesson plan. Students will be researching dental health and coming up with reasons why it is important to brush their teeth so they do not get cavities. Therefore, they will be expected to comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention. Standard 3: Demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health The standard aligns with the lesson plan. The class will be researching dental health on their laptops which will mean they are demonstrating the ability to access valid information. Standard 5: Demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health. The standard aligns with the lesson plan. The students will have the opportunity to independently come up with a list of reasons of why it is important to brush their teeth and effects of not brushing their teeth properly. They will also have the opportunity to make a reminder chart for brushing their teeth which they can choose to take home and hang in their bathrooms. The lesson gives the students the opportunity to use decision making skills to enhance their health. Standard 7: Demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks. The standard does not align with the lesson plan. There is no opportunity given to the students during this lesson plan that allows them to demonstrate their ability to practice health enhancing behaviors or avoid health risks. The lesson is mostly researching and writing there are no hands-on activities that deal with brushing teeth or dental health. Standard 8: Demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health. The standard aligns with the lesson plan. The students are given the opportunity to create charts that they can bring home and hang in their own bathrooms to serve as a reminder for

themselves and family members to brush their teeth daily. Therefore, the students are demonstrating the ability to advocate for personal and family health. d. Promotion of Health Lifestyle/Attitudes The lesson plan effectively promotes healthy lifestyle and positive attitudes towards dental health. While simply “researching dental health” is not the best way to engage and teach students about the significance of dental health, it does support healthy lifestyle by giving students the opportunity to research information about proper dental hygiene and the consequences of not participating in hygienic dental practices. A dentist or dental hygienist coming into the classroom would also be a prime advocate for dental health that students would trust since they are a professional. Finally, the student’s reminder charts that they are encouraged to bring home and hang in their bathrooms is another way they are promoting healthy lifestyle for themselves and their families. 2. Instructional Changes My first instructional change I would include in the lesson plan would be changing the anticipatory set. I would have the class complete a fun crossword puzzle worksheet that includes significant words dealing with dental hygiene that the students should be aware of. According to the American Dental Association, having a fun, easy-to-do activity included in a lesson about dental hygiene is an easy way to get students engaged in a topic that may otherwise be considered boring or redundant. The worksheet would include words that the students will be learning about during the lesson and after the students complete the crossword puzzle, I would ask students to raise their hand and tell me what the words mean. This is a proper way to segue the students into the main topic of lesson about proper dental hygiene.

Another instructional change I would make to the lesson plan would be the addition of a video on how to properly brush your teeth. The lesson was lacking any modeling of brushing teeth properly. “How to Brush your Teeth”, a video made by students in the Dental Hygiene program at Carrington University, is an informative video with an excellent example of the proper way to brush your teeth and also examples of ways to brush your teeth that are not sufficient. This is helpful for visual learners and helps students apply the information to themselves. Rebecca Alber, a writer for EDUtopia, explains that using video content amplifies

learning. Providing students with information through multiple different modes helps solidify the learning and also reaches students who learn better in different ways. The final instructional change I would make to this lesson plan would be the removal of the personal laptops for each student to use for researching dental health. Instead, I would show the students the informational video, include another video about cavity prevention and read them informative text that I would project and the students would follow along with. According to Cindi May of Scientific American, research has proved that the use of laptops in the classroom does not enhance student learning and potentially even stifles learning. I believe giving students their own laptops to research dental health would be counterproductive as many students would get easily distracted and stray from the main topic. I also think instruction on dental health can be done sufficiently through the teacher’s direct instruction, informational videos, question and answer with a dental professional and the independent practices without use of the laptops.
