So I am going to go through the process of choosing the right section of text (photo right) for each gap (photo left). From the title – “wind lashed”, and the first paragraph “stormy” we can understand that weather will be of importance in the overall text. And “depths of bitter winter” in the first paragraph only adds to this. At the end of the first paragraph we understand the author of the text is not pleased to see the boat (Pembroke) – “dreadful”, “hoped I had the wrong boat”. So let’s go through the choices from A – G to see which one will fit for 41. A – “Others felt the same. We were...” – makes references to some people and how they feel. This would not be appropriate to 41, as we don’t have any reference to anyone apart from the author in the first paragraph. B – “Going out on deck in such conditions…” – refers to people going from inside the boat (bridge, cabin, common room/lounge) to outside, and in bad weather conditions. This would not be appropriate to 41, as we understand the Pembroke is in port/harbour and not mid ocean. C – This is a possibility for the answer in 41. “affection” and “ardent fan” fits in with the idea that at the moment the author is not feeling affectionate about the boat or a fan. D – We can understand that this part refers to a cargo, maybe for the Pembroke. This would not be appropriate to 41, as the first paragraph is not talking about cargo or what is in the hold. E – The text here talks about the trajectory/movement of a ship/the Pembroke – “slipped down”, “…safe passage to your destination” and then geographical references Dover, the Channel, Scilly Isles. This would not be appropriate to 41, as the first paragraph is not talking about the journey, the boat is in port. F – We can understand here that this refers to waves, large waves, and “black monsters…streaks of foam”, “ocean moved in all directions”. This would not be appropriate to 41, as the first paragraph is not talking about mid ocean. G – This is also possibility for the answer to 41. We said the author was not happy to see the boat, it is likely his face said the same thing. And this fits in with the first sentence here – “That feeling must have been obvious…”. This is the answer for 41.

The next part of the text after 41 we understand the boat is not in the best condition inside or out, or the most comfortable – “battered”, “rusty”, “wretched”, “and noisy”. This carries on the idea of not being happy about the boat mentioned before. So C would be appropriate and is confirmed by the comment at the end of C when it talks about “deficiencies” (rusty, wretched etc.). C is the answer for 42. After 42, we understand that the boat is now moving – “tide raced us down…”, “spat us out into the North Sea”. There is talk about storms and large waves and the captain talking about being lucky. E would be appropriate here. “Hoping so” fits in with the idea of being lucky and we have more references to movement – “slipped down the Channel”. E is the answer for 43. After 43 the boat is now in mid ocean facing different storms. There are references to waves. And at the end there is a mention of size and how small the boat is, “swell threw her about like a tin toy”. B and F talk about mid ocean, but F makes mention of waves and how big they are. And after 44 it says “They hit us squarely” (waves) which would fit with F. F is the answer for 44. After 44 there are many comments related to how bad the weather is – “extreme conditions”, “wind thickened with sleet”, “snow”. B would fit as it mentions “such conditions tempted death”. B is the answer for 45. After 45 we understand that the Pembroke arrives in Montreal – “Huge trucks came for our containers”. And this will fit with D as it talks about what is in the containers, cargo. And at the end of D it makes reference to sailors, which is continued after the gap to “them” (sailors), “their combined defiance”. And continues with “seafarers”, synonym for sailor. D is the answer for 46....
