Description

Sharan Gill Post Lab Cannizzaro Post Lab Questions 1. Why does sodium benzoate dissolve so well in water, whereas benzoic acid does not? Sodium benzoate is a salt. It is pure ionic compound. So it ionizes very well in water and solubilise easily. Where as benzoic acid is organic acid compound, it will not solubilise completely in water. 2. What is the purpose of the 6M HCl in step 13? To make sure that the solution was acidified. 3. Explain how the two compounds (benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid) partition between ether and a NaOH solution in the manner that they do. HINT: Why are they soluble in the layers that they are in, and not the other? Benzoic acid will partition into aqueous NaOH solution and benzyl alcohol into the ether layer. Because, benzoic acid make salt as sodium benzoate with NaOH solution. Benzoic acid is an acid and it reacts with NaOH base to form salt. It will soluble in water. Benzyl alcohol is organic compound. It is nonpolar in nature. It will soluble in non polar solvent like ether. 4. Draw a flowchart to show the successful separation of the following two compounds. You can use ether, water, 6M HCl, and 6M NaOH....
