Case Analysis assignment essay for Martha McCaskey....

Description

Case Analysis: Martha McCaskey Strategic Issues and Problems McCaskey should engage with Phil Devon and further inquire about the proprietary information to meet upper management’s expectations. The biggest problem McCaskey will face based on her decision is that what she is doing is an unethical business practice. Evaluation and Analysis This is the most important issue because a business with unethical business practices may be unlawful and it may tarnish employee satisfaction. If the problem is not addressed, the company may face complications and business operations may potentially come to a stop. Many consulting firms have formal, written policies regarding the solicitation and performance of contracts, whereas the Industry Analysis Division at Seleries Associates did not. This is a critical problem because employees do not know what is considered ethical or unethical. As a result, McCaskey began lying to interviewees about her role and doing whatever it takes to retrieve proprietary information. In addition, the company leaders, such as Malone, further encouraged these unethical business practices by making promises for McCaskey’s promotion. Alternatives In order to avoid potential lawsuits and complications, Seleris Associates must seek a solution that will ensure all employees are following ethical business practices. The company should handle the issue with one of the following two initiatives: 1. Create an employee handbook detailing ethical business practices and company policies 2. Implement a compliance team to monitor business operations Creating an employee handbook with concrete written policies may reduce unethical business practices. It clears confusion among employees and helps distinguishes right from wrong. The drawback of this alternative is that employees may potentially ignore the handbook. Thus, it would be ineffective and the implementation of the handbook would be pointless. Implementing a compliance team within Seleris Associates to monitor business operations is another initiative that may reduce unethical business practices. The team may stop unethical behaviors as they are identified. The drawback of this solution is that there may be a conflict of interest as operations are merely monitored by the company itself. In addition, since there are no clear rules as to what is considered ethical or unethical, everything is still subjective. Recommendations The best solution is for Seleris Associates to create an employee handbook detailing ethical business practices and company policies. This solution will create the company’s culture and ensure all employees understand company policies as well as right from wrong. This solution may hinder individuality and creativity in their work, however employees will be more inclined to abide by the rules and following ethical business practices....
