Description

xxxxxxx BUS 493 International Business Professor Mabul (07/14/2019) Why did Ross's strategy of sending Chinese employees over to the US for training produced better results than bringing American managers to China? The Chinese division was a mess when John Ross took over the position. T  he joint venture was a mess. Operations were horribly inefficient. Despite low wages, productivity was being killed by poor product quality, lax inventory controls, and high employee turnover. The venture probably employed too many people, but MMC’s Chinese partner seemed to view the venture as a job-creation program and repeatedly objected to any plans for cutting the workforce. Even though John Ross did an immediate improvement, the corporate headquarters were not impressed. One of the best moves that John Ross did was to pick four of his best Chinese production employees and send them to MMC’s U.S. operations, along with a translator, for a two-month training program focusing on the latest production techniques. I believe that this strategy worked better because the Chinease employees could see with their own eyes what needed to be improved, and how they should implement these things back in China. The Chinese employees were excitinted to work through the cultural differences, reach a six sigma quality control program, and finally make profit. I also believe that the translator played a kay role since he/she could translate everything for the employees. T  he cultural differences between China and the United States in massive. It is much easier to go for a two-month training program and come back home than moving to a completely new country with your family like the two HR specialists did that Ross requested from the United States. As the Professor was mentioning in the assigned online lecture for this week, it is almost more important to educate and prepare the families of the expatriates how to beat culture chocks since they are much more valuable after the move....
