101573 Human Rights, Peace and Development Assessment 2 Case Study Guide The purpose of this assessment is for students to become aware of some of the Human Rights Dilemmas that occur in the field. For the Case Study students are presented with three papers each presenting a Human Rights Dilemma. Students must read all of the papers and choose the dilemma they would prefer to discuss. The question that is being addressed in the Case Study for each Dilemma is:

What would you do and why? Discussion Board Each paper has its own Discussion Board. Students enter the appropriate Discussion Board for the paper they have chosen. The Discussion Board will be open from 14/4/18(5:00PM)-5/5/18(5:00PM). It is important to note the closing date and time of the Discussion Board as it will not be reopened under any circumstance. Students are to post a minimum of three substantive posts (read summary points below for definition of substantive) and include screenshots of their posts as an appendix to their written submission. If students do not meet this requirement they will fail the assessment. Students must adhere to netiquette in their postings. The Discussion Board is to act as a springboard for debate about problematic, dilemma-prone issues of human rights. Written Paper Upon closure of the Discussion Board students complete a 750 word Discussion Paper answering the question: ‘what would you do and why?’ - pertaining to their chosen Human Rights Dilemma. The paper is a discursive, scholarly and critical work that is based in the human rights academic literature and acknowledges critical points within the Discussion Board. In other words, students must provide a clear, logical and justified account for their proposed actions and acknowledgement and critique of alternatives. A minimum of academic references are to be used on top of the paper that is the basis of the discussion. Therefore, the Reference List should contain a minimum of 5 references. Note – students do not simply cut-and-paste or just reproduce their postings in the paper, but rather integrate the information presented in their posts into a coherent and cogent argument. Students must submit the work to Turnitin and include screen shots of their postings as an Appendix to their paper. Submission date – Friday 7/5/19(11:59PM).

In Summary, students need to: 1. Read the Case Study Papers Paper 1: Held (2016) Paper 2: Keck (2016) Paper 3: Sampson (2016) 2. Choose preferred Case Study 3. Join the appropriate Discussion Board for your chosen Case Study. 4. Complete 3 substantive postings (Substantive refers to the quality of the posting. A limit is not being placed on the length of the postings but they must clearly indicate engagement with the literature, understanding of central concepts and critical thinking - in text referencing can occur in the posts but a reference list is not required in the posts. Students must also submit screen shots/copies of their postings as an Appendix to the written submission) 5. Upon closure of the Discussion Board students are to prepare the written submission (750 words) which needs to be referenced, submitted to Turnitin by the due date 7/5/19 11:59pm. NB1: If students have forgotten to screen-shot or print their posts on the Discussion Board they must request confirmation of their participation from the Unit Coordinator - Debra Keenahan NB2: In accordance with the Learning Guide and the Marking Criteria for this Assessment, participation in the Discussion Board is listed as Criterion 1; as such, participation in the Discussion Board is given a weighting of ‘10’ marks of the allocated ‘30’ marks for the assessment (1 mark for submission of screen shots and 3 marks per posting – with a maximum of 3 postings to be counted). The remaining ‘20’ marks are allocated to the written paper according to - coherence and cogency of argument, structure of paper, critique and analysis of literature and alternative perspectives, presentation and references....
