Learning Objectives •• Identify that the ISM Code seeks to improve management both at sea and onboard ship in order to reduce accidents caused by human error. •• Identify that a combination of poor cargo loading or ballasting, corrosion and heavy weather can result in the loss of vessels due to structural failure and how this can be avoided •• Identify the importance of correct operation and planned maintenance procedures in avoiding failure of the propulsion, electrical and steering systems. •• Identify how operational procedures reduce the risks when operating safety and pollution prevention equipment. •• State the most important factors that increase the risks to vessel safety with respect to vessel communications and vessel navigation •• Identify the main types of Pollution dealt with by MARPOL and other IMO Conventions
