Description

Directions: Use your textbook and resources of your choice to complete the left sections below and on the next pages.

-CELL MEMBRANE-

ORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART

-CENTRAL VACUOLE-

Also referred to as the plasma membrane. Forms the outer covering of the cell. Made up of a phospholipid (1 glycerol, 2 fatty acids and a phosphate group) bilayer with protein embedded in it. It protects and supports the cell. It controls what may enter and leave the cell.

Helps maintain Homeostasis, controls what enters or leaves the cell. DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

Membrane bound sac that stores nutrients, water, ions, and wastes.

ORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART

DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

-NUCLEUS-

A large oval structure surrounded by a membrane or covering. It contains chromosomes. Control center of the cell. It regulates or controls all activities in the cell.

Found only in Eukaryotic cells.

ORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

-NUCLEAR MEMBRANEORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART

Sometimes also called the nuclear envelope. It is the outer covering of the cell nucleus. It controls what can enter or leave the nucleus.

Also made up of phosolipid bilayer. Contains membrane proteins. DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

-CHROMOSOME -

ORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART

Set of structures found in the nucleus, made up of DNA, plus some protein. They are thick rod shaped structures and direct activities of the cell. Pass on traits to new cells and make ribosomes.

Only visible during cell division.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

-CYTOPLASM-

ORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART

The interior of the cell. The region between the nucleus and cell membrane. Consists of a jellylike substance that contains many organelles. Responsible for movement of materials throughout the cell.

Also contains water, ions and other macromolecules. DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

Diameters (nm) -CYTOSKELETON

ORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART

The cytoplasmic network of protein filaments that plays an essential role in cell movement and shape. Composed of microtubules and microfilaments.

Microtubles 25 Actin filaments 7 Intermeidate Filaments 10 ISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

Hair-like structures in tightly packed rows that are used for movement -CILIAORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART

DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

-RiBOSOMEORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART

Organelle on which protein is made. Found scattered in the cytoplasm and often attached to the surface of rough endoplasmic reticulum.

Found in both prokaryotes and Eukaryotes.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

-CELL WALLORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART

A non-living structure that surrounds the cell membrane and provides support for the cell. Very stiff and rigid made up of cellulose. Found in plant, and bacteria cells. Fungi’s cell wall made up chitin.

Cell Wall Hinders Cellular communication. Caused plants to evolve differently. DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

Threadlike structure that grows out of a cell and enables movement.

Made of Microtubules

-FLAGELLAORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

-ROUGH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM ORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART

A network of tubules, vesicles and sacs that are interconnected and serve in protein synthesis. Has a rough texture due to the presence of ribosomes. DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

- SMOOTH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM

A network of tubules, vesicles and sacs that are interconnected.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

ORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART

-VACUOLE-

ORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART

-VESICLE-

Is involved in cholesterol metabolism, membrane synthesis, and detoxification.

A membrane-bound sac that plays roles in intracellular digestion and the release of cellular waste products. In animal cells, they are generally small, but large in plant cells and play a role in turgor pressure. When a plant is wellwatered, water collects here A relatively small and enclosed compartment, separated from the cytoplasm by at least one lipid bilayer. They store, transport, or digest cellular products and wastes.

Plant cells require water as a reactant for photosynthesis reaction. DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

Created by the endoplasmic retiuclum or the golgi apparatus

ORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

-GOLGI APPARATUS-

An organelle that packages and distributes molecules made by a eukaryotic cell.

Plays a role in exocytosis.

ORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART

DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

-LYSOSOME-

ORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART

Organelle found in eukaryotic cells that contains digestive enzymes. “Clean up crew” for cells. Enzymes breakdown food molecules into smaller ones. Lysosomes break down old cell parts.

Needed to maintain Homeostasis. DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

-MITOCHONDRIA-

Organelle that produces much of the ATP made by eukaryotic cells.

ORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART

Organelle associated with Aerobic Respiration. DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

-CHLOROPLAST-

Organelle that uses light energy to make carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water. Found only in plant cells.

Organelle associated with Photosynthesis.

ORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART

DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

-NUCLEOLUSORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART

One or more dense areas can often be seen inside the nucleus. This area functions in RNA and ribosome synthesis

Only plant and animal cells contain nucleoli. Doesn’t have a membrane. DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

-CONTRACTILE VACOULEORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART

A type of vacuole involved in osmoregulation. It pumps excess water out of a cell and is found prominently in freshwater protists.

Usually star shaped.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

-PLASTIDS-

Are large organelles found on plants and some protists but not in animals or fungi. They can easily be seen through a light microscope. They usually store food molecules.

ORGANELLE or ORGANELLE PART

Store pigments give Produce an orange or red color when they are ripe. DISTINGUISHING FEATURE(S)

-PHAGOCYTOSIS-

Temporary cytoplasmic extrusions in amoebae which function in locomotion and/or in feeding by engulfing food. One or more may be formed at a time by a given cell.

Feeding Process called Phagocytosis.
