General Biology Cell Respiration Worksheet Cell respiration is the process that takes sugars produced by plants and makes it into energy. It is the opposite of photosynthesis which takes sun and carbon dioxide and makes it into energy and oxygen while cell respiration takes the sugars of plants and oxygen and makes it into energy and carbon dioxide. For cell respiration, I am going to have you use Khan Academy to learn about how this works. Khan makes it understandable by breaking it down in an understandable way. Go into the following website (using Firefox or Explorer since it will not work in Google Chrome) https://www.khanacademy.org/science/biology/cellular-respiration-and-fermentation/intro-to-cellularrespiration/v/introduction-to-cellular-respiration 1. 2. 3.

4. 5. 6.

7.

Write the formula for cellular respiration  C6H12 O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2 O + energy What does Khan explain is the “energy” portion  Heat and 38 ATPs List the stages of cellular respiration 1) Glycolysis 2) The Krebs cycle 3) The Electron Transport Chain Which part of cellular respiration is anaerobic  Glycolysis If there is no oxygen, what is the process called  Fermentation What are the other molecules that are produced? 1) NAD+ 2) NADH What does NADH do? 1) NADH each produce 3 ATPs in an ideal situation. 2) NADH are used in the electron transport chain to produce bulk of your energy currency.

Below you will learn about oxidation and reduction. Please go to the following website: https://www.khanacademy.org/science/biology/cellular-respiration-and-fermentation/intro-to-cellularrespiration/v/oxidation-and-reduction-in-cellular-respiration 8. 9.

What is the definition of oxidation by a biologist  Losing hydrogen atoms What is the definition of reduction per a biologist  Gaining hydrogen atoms

10. 11. 12.

What molecules are oxidized  Carbon What molecules are reduced  Oxygen Where does he claim energy comes from?  Electrons going from higher energy state to a lower energy state it will generate energy.

Now we are going to go through each step of cellular respiration. We are going to start with glycolysis by going to the following website: https://www.khanacademy.org/science/biology/cellular-respiration-and-fermentation/glycolysis/v/glycolysis 13. 14. 15. 16. 17. 18. 19.

Where in the cell does glycolysis take place (this is not mentioned in the video)  Cytoplasm What does the investment phase need to continue  2 ATPs What are the products of the investment phase  PGAL What does each molecule become in the payoff phase  Pyruvate What do the PGAL’s have as side products?  2 ATPS, NADH List the formula he writes out starting with Glucose  Glucose + 2NAD+ + 2ATP + 4 ADS + 4 Phosphate groups What is the net production of ATP and NADH?  Pyruvate

Next you need to read about the preparatory reaction which is called the pyruvate oxidation; the step that is required before the pyruvates can go into the citric acid (Krebs) cycle. To read this go into the website that follows: https://www.khanacademy.org/science/biology/cellular-respiration-and-fermentation/pyruvate-oxidation-andthe-citric-acid-cycle/a/pyruvate-oxidation 20. 21. 22.

23.

What organelle does the preparatory reaction take place?  Mitochondria Where in this organelle does the preparatory reaction take place?  Matrix List the steps of oxidation of pyruvate: 1) A carboxyl group is removed from pyruvate, releasing carbon dioxide 2) NAD+ is reduced to NADH 3) An acetyl group is transferred to coenzyme A, resulting in acetyl-CoA What are the end products of this reaction?  Acetyl-CoA

Next we need to go into the citric acid (Krebs) cycle. Please see the following website: https://www.khanacademy.org/science/biology/cellular-respiration-and-fermentation/pyruvate-oxidation-andthe-citric-acid-cycle/v/krebs-citric-acid-cycle 24. 25. 26. 27. 28.

Name the two areas of the mitochondria  Crista and Matrix What do they call the preparatory step for the Kreb’s cycle?  Pyruvate oxidation What is the first step to get the pyruvate ready?  Oxidization What is the molecule called after one carbon is cleaved off?  Acetyl CoA Name one other product besides Acetyl CoA?  Oxaloacetic Acid

29. 30. 31. 32. 33. 34. 35.

How many carbons are in oxaloacetic acid?  4 When oxaloacetic acid and Acetyl CoA merge, what does it make?  Citric acid How many carbons are in citric acid?  6 What do the carbons that get cleaved off become?  CO2 How many carbon dioxides are made for each glucose molecule?  3 Name the last step of cell respiration?  Electron transport chain What is the main purpose of the ETC?  Convert reduced co enzymes into ATP...
