3 CGC Fire- Resistant Assemblies

Fire Protection

CGC is the undisputed leader among building material manufacturers in providing products and systems designed to keep people safe from fire. Fire safety properties are described in terms of fire resistance, surface-burning characteristics and noncombustibility.

Fire Safety

Building assembly’s fire resistance

The period of t ime t he assembly will serve as a barrier to t he spread of f ire and how long the assembly can function structurally after it is exposed to a fire of standard intensit y as defined by CAN/ULC S101 and ASTM E119. Sometimes this is also called the assembly’s fire endurance.

Flame spread

The measure of a material’s relat ive burning behavior. Both t he flame spread and smoke developed are measured in accordance with CAN/ULC S102M, and ASTM E84.

Noncombustible material Class A designation

A material t hat will not burn or contribute any appreciable amount of fuel to a f ire, as determined through CAN/ULC S114 and ASTM E136. Refers to material that may ignite but will not sustain a flame. Class A products will not generate excessive visibilit y-obscuring smoke, an impor tant factor in designing saf e egress for building occupants. Class A is not a fire-resistance designation.

Fire- Rated

Fire-resistance rat ings have long been used by UL/ULC, ASTM and building codes to measure the per formance of various construct ions for f ire containment purposes. As applied to elements of buildings, t he fire- resistance rat ing classif ies t he abilit y of an assembly to conf ine and isolate fire wit hin a zone comprised of f ire resist ance- rated walls, ceiling and floor assemblies. The ratings relate to fire tests designed to determine how quickly fire can raise t he temperature to unacceptable levels. Fire-rated assemblies are tested and cer tif ied in t heir ent iret y. These designs are ident if ied in t he ULC and UL Fire Resistance Director y, which is updated yearly and can be referenced at t he Underwriters Laboratories of Canada website at www.ULC.ca, and t he Underwriters Laboratories web site at www.ul.com.

Fire Resistance

All ULC and UL assemblies listed in t his folder are cer t if ied for use in Canada and comply with CAN/ ULC S101 for f ire resistance. The Standards Council of Canada recognizes ULC and UL as accredited test ing and cert ificat ion organizat ions for cer tif ication of materials and system s to Canadian standards.

Selector Overview

The sections listed below correspond to the different types of assemblies in which CGC products are tested. Each section is arranged sequentially according to fire ratings, the criterion that most often governs selection. Each entry within a section contains a reference to the source for more information within the Architectural Reference Library binder.

Test Certification

Test Conditions and Certification

Fire and sound tested assemblies listed in t his Selector are based on characterist ics, proper t ies and per formance of materials and syst ems obtained under controlled test conditions as set for th in the appropriate ULC and ASTM Standards in ef fect at t he t ime of test. These list ings are shor t summaries to serve as a compilation and guide of construct ion assemblies available in t he selection process. For complete informat ion on construct ion details and components used in these systems, refer to the individual Folder reference. CGC Inc. will provide inf ormat ion for published f ire, sound and struct ural data covering systems designed and constructed according to its published specif ications. Tests are conducted on Company products assembled to meet performance requirement s of established test procedures specif ied by various agencies. System per formance following any substitut ion of materials or compromise in assembly design cannot be cert ified and may result in failure under crit ical conditions. Sound tests are conducted under controlled laboratory condit ions according to ASTM procedures. Comparable f ield performance depends on building design and careful at tention to detailing and workmanship. Cert ain sound t ests, conducted in accordance with ASTM m ethods, measured sound transmission of 11 frequencies. These data have been retained in this Selector to serve as a guide to t he designer. Based on experience, t he STC values are ver y close to t hose obtained f or the assembly under current met hods at 16 frequencies. Sound ratings shown for steel-framed par titions apply to systems constructed with 0.5 mm (25 gauge) steel studs 610 mm (24 ⬙) o.c., unless otherwise noted. Heavier gauge studs are more rigid and may not provide the same sound ratings.

Loading Conditions

All load bearing assemblies, wit h except ion of steel columns, are required to be loaded to t heir full design capacit y during tests for f ire resistance as required in CAN/ULC S101 and ASTM E119. The 2005 edit ion of t he Nat ional Building Code of Canada now references t he Third Edition of CAN/ULC S101-04 t hat requires applied loads be calculated under Limit States design principles. The previous edition referenced in t he 1995 Nat ional Building Code of Canada permit t ed the use of Working Stress or Limit States principles for calculat ion of applied loads. In some cases there may be a signif icant dif ference between these calculations of applied loads. In t hese cases ULC and UL are amending t heir on-line and subsequent printed directories to provide guidance in t he “Guide Informat ion” sect ion and notat ing individual designs t hat may require invest igation as to “Load Restrict ion” or “Reduct ion” of t he design. This applies to both ULC and UL

designs as well as assemblies certified by other Standards Council of Canada recognized agencies such as Intertek (Warnock- Hersey International)
