Commuter assignment- One where the expatriate travels between his home and host country at frequent intervals.
Culture shock- A generalized trauma one experiences in a new and different culture because of having to learn and cope with a vast array of new cues and expectations.
Ethnocentric framework- A staffing approach in which all key management positions, whether in the home country or abroad, are filled by home country nationals.
Expatriate failure- The premature return of an expatriate manager to the home country.
Expatriates- Noncitizens of the country in which they are working. Expatriate selection- The process of screening executives to find those with the greatest inclination and highest potential for a foreign assignment.
Geocentric framework- Staffing perspective that seeks the best people for key jobs throughout the organization, regardless of nationality.
Home-country nationals- Expatriate employees who are citizens of the country in which the company is headquartered.
Human resource management (HRM)- The staffing function of the organization; includes the activities of human resources planning, recruitment, selection, performance appraisal, compensation, retention, and labor relations.
Localization- Process whereby an expatriate retains a foreign assignment provided she accept the status, and corresponding compensation, of a local hire.
Polycentric framework- A staffing policy whereby a company relies on host country nationals to manage operations in their own country, while parent-country nationals staff corporate headquarters.
Repatriation- An expatriate's return to his or her home country.
Reshoring- A situation in which a firm brings operations back to its home country from abroad.
Reverse-expat- A local manager who directs a Western-based company's emerging-market business and is rotated through some of the company's established operations outside of that market before returning home.
Staffing framework- A systems view that articulates the internal structures and mechanisms of human resource management.
