A&P Lab Exercise 40: Urinary System

Goals for this lab period: - Identify the structures and organs which comprise the urinary system on models and diagrams - Identify the different regions of the kidney and the function of each region - Compare features of the urethra in males and females - Identify tissue types listed below on kidney slides Terminology: Micturition (voiding) – emptying of the urinary bladder Anatomy of the Urinary System Kidneys – paired kidneys located on the dorsal body wall, located in superior lumbar region, right lower than left b/c of liver Capsule – first layer of supportive tissue surrounding each kidney, a fibrous transparent capsule that prevents infections in surrounding regions from spreading to the kidneys Cortex – superficial kidney region, light in color and highly vascularizd Medullary region – contains renal pyramids, deep to cortex, darker: reddish-brown Renal columns – areas of tissue in between the renal pyramids, like cortex in appearance Renal pelvis – basinlike cavity that is continuous with the ureters Nephrons – consists of 2 major structures: a glomerulus and a renal tubule. Millions of these units (in each kidney) are responsible for the formation of urine and are located in between the kidney cortex and medulla Ureters - serves to draint urine from the kidneys to the bladder by the process of peristalsis Urinary bladder – receives the urine via the ureters and acts a temporary storage area Urethra – drains the bladder True or False? The urethra is shared by the urinary and reproductive systems in males. True True or False? The urethra is shared by the urinary and reproductive systems in females. False Is the urethra the same length in males and females? No, in females it is shorter (20 cm vs 4 cm) Which organs of the urinary system are paired? The kidneys and the ureters ___Nephrons______ are the basic anatomical unit responsible for urine formation. What are the two major structures that make up the nephron? Glomerulus (a capillary knot) and renal tubule Microscope Slides (p. 70) Kidney – locate simple cuboidal epitherlium...
