CHRISTINE DANICA ILA SAN JUAN BS ACCT 1-C WHERE ELSE CAN YOU FIND COLD? I personally choose this artwork because the representation of all the elements used in the whole creation gives deep symbolism and concrete explanation of what will happen if we continue to live with Modern Technology without looking back to its tremendous hit back to our nature. Imagine, the penguins try to survive and trying to live in a refrigerator that is the only way for them to survive because all the icebergs they supposed to live are already melted? That would be odd if it will really happen in the future. How about the trees? They can’t grow leaves and bear fruits anymore because the soil is already lifeless, no water at all. How will we survive if we remain to enjoy the indulgence of having the convenience brought by the continuous improvement of technology while letting the original shelter destroyed and fall into pieces? According to Martin Heidegger, Technology is a Poiesis, which means “bringing-forth” to bring out or reveal (Aletheia) the “truth” (Episteme). But for Modern Technology, it is a challenging -forth, rather than bringing-forth since it is very aggressive in its activity. I hope this artwork can serve as Poiesis to the people, the elders, and the youth (hope for the world’s future) to recognize the circumstance that our nature is suffering because of the gradual challenging- forth caused by creating and developing Modern Technology. There are three major negative impacts of technology on environment. First, environmental pollution resulting from waste output is a resultant factor of technology. Before the modern times, there wasn’t even a Macao milk tea or a Starbucks frappe, that’s why there is a less problem about plastics before compared to now. And another, contribution to global warming is the second effect of the growing technology. The ozone layer that protects us from the strong UV rays of the sun is already destroyed because of too much release of smoke from factories and even in a simple burning of plastic wastes on our home. Lastly, depletion of natural resources and ecological imbalances experienced today result from technology. The wildfires, melting of icebergs, earthquakes, tsunamis, and stronger typhoons are natural disasters but as result of technology, there comes imbalances and these disasters become stronger and more destructive to properties and even kill lives. And so, in order to be progressive while preserving our needs from the natural resources, we should practice more sustainable development, we plant trees for more safe air we breathe, and as a shelter and source of food for other animals. We should lessen our carelessness and ignorance, use technology not only for advancement, but also for promoting awareness, and ways to make our world better in the present and for the future ahead.
