Introductory Sociology

After my reading of the Chapter 13: Gender Stratification

1. I have learned … about the theories of gender which involve a structural functional approach, symbolic interaction approach, and a social conflict approach. The structural functional approach suggests preindustrial societies had distinctive roles for males and females because the reflect of biological differences while industrial societies marked gender inequality becomes dysfunctional. Symbolic interaction suggests individuals use gender as an element of their personal performance and it plays a part in shaping our daily lives. Social conflict suggests that gender plays a part of social inequality and social conflict to which benefit men and disadvantage women. 2. I was surprised to know… how in way women can be sort of considered a minority even though they outnumber men. Women unfortunately earn less income, wealth, education, and power than man. Now if we link race with gender they both combine to produce low social standings.

3. I see how the chapter information relates to my life… how I recall when I growing up I'd hardly ever saw women on TV or in films representing powerful characters. Growing up watching media I would mainly see males playing superheroes or taking lead roles while women like said in the book they were used more as a sexual interest. However, it is amazing to see how much gender in mass media has changed. Now more than ever we see women taking on bigger roles and being the lead role of film. One perfect example, is the film Wonder Woman.

What generalizations about the linkage between sex and gender can be made based on the cross-cultural research of George Murdock?

In Israeli kibbutzim both sexes share both work and decision. In Margaret Mead's research she noticed some societies both sexes either had a more feminine culture or a masculine one. While some cultures had reversed roles such as women were more masculine and men more sensitive. The generalizations about the linkage based on sex and gender that can be made base of George Murdock's research is that some tasks are either feminine or masculine. Home centered tasks and taking care of children are left to the women because they bear the children. Tasks such as hunting was left to man because of greater size and strength....
