CHAPTER 1 Both/and (in relation to how fashion is studied) Understanding fashion and culture requires both/and thinking rather than either or Can't be change or continuity Should be change and continuity Mobius Strip shows how there is no beginning or end for the ribbon has two sides, and is continuous, and meets at both ends. o It is like a sense of convergence of time and space in a piece of ribbon, because there is no outside, inside Articulation is a concept and method in cultural studies. Style-Fashion-Dress A system of concepts Style Employing agency for the construction of self through the assembly of garments, accessories and beauty regimes that may or may not be in fashion Style Narratives Telling a story by self-telling through clothing and one's choices Dress The more neutral term defines as everything that modifies or supplements the body Fashion Studies & Cultural Studies Cultural Studies and Fashion Studies are both good concepts. The definitions are similar, but have different connotations. o It seems that culture is a broader concept than fashion, though both emphasize custom Fashion: is a custom of time Culture: Custom over time Fashion and Culture simultaneously go over a continual change and continuity Essentialism the belief that things are the way they are because that is "just the way they are" Culture The distinctive ideas, customs, social behavior, products or way of life of a particular society , people or period Fashion Is defined as style narratives collectively in a flux with time...
