Chapter 1 Foundational Principles: 1) Leadership is a concern of all of us. 2) Leadership is viewed and valued differently by various disciplines and cultures 3) Conventional views of leadership have changed. 4) Leadership can be exhibited in many ways. 5) Leadership qualities and skills can be learned and developed. 6) Leadership committed to ethical action is needed to encourage change and social responsibility. Three Basic Relational Principles of the Leadership Process: 1) Knowing: yourself, how change occurs, and how and why others may view things differently than you do 2) Being: ethical, principles, authentic, open, caring and inclusive 3) Doing: acting in social responsible ways, consistently and congruently, as a participant in a community, and on your commitments and passions “We view leadership as a relational and ethical process of people together attempting to accomplish positive change”. “Leadership is an outcome of people working together on a common agenda or change initiative”. Effective followers: Individuals with high organizational commitment who are able to function well in a change-oriented team environment. Additionally, they are independent, critical thinkers with highly developed integrity and competency. Followers Should: 1) Offer support to the leader 2) Take initiative 3) Play counseling and coaching roles to the leader, when appropriate 4) Raise issues and/or concerns when necessary 5) Seek and encourage honest feedback 6) Clarify your role and expectations 7) Show appreciation 8) Keep the leader informed 9) Resist inappropriate influence of the leader...
