Every company has 5 core functional behaviors o Accounting department o Human resource department o Marketing department o Research and development department o Production department The accounting department o Mathematics of business o Measures and provides financial information about an organization primarily for its decision makers, investors, and taxing authorities o Generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) are accounting rules for preparing, presenting, and reporting financial statements so the organization and its investors can have a standard set of reports regarding a business’ well being  Includes balance sheets, income statements, earning statements, and cash flow reports o SOX compliant The human resource department o Administers people o Economic terms like “firm-specific human capital” o Involves recruiting and hiring new employees, evaluating and managing personnel, tracking personnel data, administering payroll and pensions, and sometimes providing advice to employees regarding work-related issues The marketing department o The promotion of a business’ products and is a core business functional behavior o Focus on customers and have core responsibilities like advertising and branding a business’ products and services o Products are the actual goods and services a business produces and how they relate to a customer’s needs including warranties, guarantees o Promotion is the advertisement of a business’ products and services o A discernible ROI - return on investment o Placement is how a product or service is delivered to a customer The research and development department o Take a creative and systematic approach to evolve a business’ original idea and devise new ones o Consider if their ideas are feasible and if they can be implemented o Need a broad grasp of the business they serve and its industry The production department o Goods and/or services o Makes these goods and services to be sold Information systems collaboration o Information technology (IT)

Chapter 13 - Business System Reporting 



Business system reporting o Short for informational output from an information system to facilitate decision making o Most reports are periodic  Can be produced at given intervals o Reports can also be demand reports, meaning that they can be produced whenever they are needed o Demand reports are sometimes called ad hoc reports o Reports help businesses analyze information and can be predictive in nature to make strategic and tactical decisions o Tactical decisions - lower end, specific actions for a larger site o Strategic decision - highest end, for long-term decisions, most summeriazed o Captive import o Reporting summarization levels refers to the level of detail or level of summarization in a report. o The computerized cash register has software installed called a transaction processing system (TPS) that collects and stores data o Analysis and predictive reporting include combinations of budget, forecast, and variance reports  Previous = actual o All variances are bad and are typically shown as a percentage o Illiquid asset o RFID - Radial frequency ID tag Knowledge Check o What level uses the most summarized report  Executive o What provides the groundwork for all other reports  Tps o Reports with the most details are for what kind of decisions  Tactile o Distilling a detail report results in what  Summarization o Reports with the most summerzation are for what  Strategic
