Chapter 4.3 – The Organized Labor Movemnet Terms: Sweatshops- is a workplace with very poor, socially unacceptable or illegal working conditions. Company towns- is a place where practically all stores and housing are owned by the one company that is also the main employer. Company towns are often planned with a suite of amenities such as stores, houses of worship, schools, markets and recreation facilities. Collective bargaining- negotiation of wages and other conditions of employment by an organized body of employees. Socialism- a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole. Haymarket Riot- was a violent confrontation between police and labor protesters in Chicago on May 4, 1886, that became a symbol of the international struggle for workers' rights. Homestead Strike- was a violent labor dispute between the Carnegie Steel Company and many of its workers that occurred in 1892 in Homestead, Pennsylvania. Pullman Strike- a widespread railroad strike and boycott that disrupted rail traffic in the U.S. Midwest in June–July 1894 What was a typical factory job schedule? How long did they work? The typical work day at this time lasted anywhere from 10-18 hours per day, six days a week. By the end of the 1800’s nearly one in five children worked instead of going to school. Why? Because wages were very low Explain what “wage slavery” is. a situation in which a person's livelihood depends on wages or a salary, especially when the dependence is total and immediate. Why did most Americans reject the idea of socialism? Didn’t agree with capitalism which is what we have today. What were the Knights of Labor? a union founded in 1869 What was the difference in ideas between the Knights and AFL? The AFL was a formal federation of labor unions whereas Knights of Labor was much more a secretive type. When was the first major labor strike? 1886 Haymarket Riot in Chicago...
