Description

Chapter 5 Review Questions:

3. Do the advantages of proactive policing outweigh the disadvantages? Explain. The advantages of proactive policing do not outweigh the disadvantages. It is true that proactive policing does take a role in preventing and detering crime rates (111). At the same time "aggressively arrest and detain suspicious persons” is unethical. In Chapters 1 and 2 it is pointed out that racial profiling can have an influence on suspicion. There is no standard to identify a person who acts and looks guilty. Trusting your gut can only get someone so far. It is a ridiculous idea to detain or arrest an innocent person out of pure suspicion. 4. Explain the concept of broken windows policing, why might it be successful? Broken window policing is "A term used to describe the role of the police as maintainers of community order and saftey". The broken window policing theory assumes neighborhoods can be improved if police officers keep in contact with the community in a non-crime fighting way. (112). In practice this method has shown success and brilliance in statistics. Part of its success can be conected to an increase in comfort in the communities, cooperation and public confidence instead of living in fear (113). References: Siegel, L. J., & Worral, J. L. (n.d.).
