Check Your Understanding 1.3 Short Answer Questions: Answers Question 4 Three physiological responses Isaac may experience, which may assist him in the Grand final are:     

His heartrate will increase to pump blood around his body faster to give him more energy to run around during the game. His lungs will expand which helps deliver more oxygen to his muscles when he runs or grips the ball. His liver will release more sugars into his body to help energise him as he plays the game. He will perspire to cool his body and regulate his temperature (keep it at optimal levels) while he is playing. Isaac’s pupils will dilate to allow more light into his eyes which can help him see his teammates, opponents and the ball more effectively.

Question 5 The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for returning Isaac’s body to its normal level of functioning so he can maintain homeostasis. This takes longer to occur than sympathetic nervous system activation because adrenaline and other hormones released during vigorous exercise linger in the bloodstream and take some time to disappear.

Question 6 When the sympathetic nervous system is activated for prolonged periods, physiological stress occurs causing internal organs to operate at abnormally high levels. This can lead to physical and psychological problems.

Question 7 The sympathetic nervous system is activated quickly so that adrenaline and noradrenaline can enter the bloodstream immediately. However, due to their lingering effects within the bloodstream, the parasympathetic nervous system has a slower response rate to bring various physiological processes (e.g. heartrate) back to normal levels....
