CH 8 Periodic Properties of the Elements Video Examples (via Dr. Ben Shepler): - Orbital energy diagram: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u37c0bNiEKM - Electron configurations 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7scJO8YZxU - Electron configurations 2 (ions): https://youtu.be/YyyPi-oT5uc - Abbreviated (Noble Gas) configurations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaawWvtfG9E - Valence and core: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQlHSLAavNs
Problems: 1) Write the full electron configurations and draw the number of valence electrons for the following atoms/ions: a) N b) Ti c) S2− N=7 Configuration: 1s22s22p3 Or [He]2s22p3
Ti = 22 Configuration: 1s22s22p63s23p64s23d2 or [Ar] 3d24s2
S2Configuration: 1s22s22p63s23p6 Or [Ne] 3s23p6
Note: The last one is 3p6 instead of 3p4 because 2 electrons have been added (the 2-)
2) Write the full electron configurations and state the number of valence electrons for the following atom/ions:
Ca - 20 Configuration: 1s22s22p63s23p64s2
Ag+ Cu - 29 Configuration: 1s22s22p63s23p64s13d10 Configuration: 2 2 6 2 6 10 2 6 10 1s 2s 2p 3s 3p 3d 4s 4p 4d 5s1 # of Valence Electrons: 1
# of Valence Electrons: 2 # of Valence Electrons: 1
Note: The electrons jump from 4s to 3d, so take one away from 4s an give it to 3d to make it full
3) Write the abbreviated electron configurations and state the number of valence electrons for the following atom/ions: a) Tc b) Si c) Ra Tc Si Ra Configuration: [Kr] 4d55s2 Configuration: [Ne] 3s23p2 Configuration: [Rn] 7s2 # of Valence Electrons: 2 # of Valence Electrons: 4
# of Valence Electrons: 2
**** For Below: Size increases to the left and going down **** 4) Choose the larger atom in each pair: a) N or F b) C or Ge c) N or Al
6) Choose the larger atom/ion of each pair: a) S or S2 b) Ca or Ca2+ c) Br or Cl
7) Choose the atom in each pair with the higher first ionization energy: a) Al or S b) As or Sb c) N or Si 8) Choose the atom in each pair with the greater metallic character: a)Sb or Pb b) K or Ge c) As or Sn...
