General Exam and Quiz Policies -Makeup PolicyThere are *NO* makeup exams or quizzes. Likewise, exams and quizzes will not be given in advance for any reason. Students arriving late will not be granted additional time to complete an exam or quiz. Students who miss a Midterm Exam or the Final Exam must contact their instructor immediately. Send an email to Professor Northrup and to Program Coordinator Abby Rosensweig. -Exam ConflictsIf you have an unavoidable conflict with the scheduled Midterm Exams or Final Exam, you must let Professor Northrup and the Program Coordinator know as soon as possible, and no later than Monday, October 1. NU varsity student athletes traveling for official competition are eligible to take quizzes or exams remotely during sanctioned travel. Student-athletes should communicate with Professor Northrup and the Program Coordinator as soon as they become aware of any such travel conflicts. The following will be made available to you for exams and quizzes: 1) Periodic table 2) Extra reference materials, equations, etc. that are useful, but would otherwise require excessive memorization, will be announced and placed on the course Canvas site prior to each exam or quiz in order to aid your preparation. The identical reference page(s) will be attached to the exam or quiz.

You are responsible for bringing the following to exams and quizzes: A scientific calculator with log capability. While graphing calculators are permitted, it is strictly forbidden to use any stored programs. Your calculator may be checked before or at any time during exams or quizzes at the discretion of the exam proctors.

Quizzes Quizzes will be administered during ten specified sessions (usually Thursday, but see above or detailed calendar). You must take the quiz in the class section in which you are registered. Failure to do so will result in a score of zero on the quiz in question. The remainder of the quiz session will involve other lecture or problem solving activities including discussion of solutions to the quiz problems. -Quiz FormatAll quizzes are scheduled for 20 minutes with the exception of Quiz 1, which will be longer. All quizzes will be in a multiple choice format. You will select a letter answer on the form provided. Work you do toward the answer will not be considered; only the chosen multiple choice answer will be used to determine your score. No exceptions! As the on-line format of quizzes may change, additional information about taking the exams will be provided later. -Quiz Start Time PolicyQuizzes will start at the scheduled time in the quiz section (i.e. 10:20 AM CT or 11:30 AM CT) and will end 20 minutes after the scheduled start time (i.e. 10:40 AM CT or 11:50 AM CT). Students arriving late will not receive extra time. -Quiz Contribution to Overall EvaluationTen quizzes will be given, but only points from seven of these quizzes will contribute to your overall course score. The seven highest scores will automatically be selected; you need not indicate which scores should be counted. As there are no makeup quizzes, an absence will be treated as a score of zero. There is no evaluation or judgment of dropped scores or dropped absences.

Exams Two Midterm Exams and one Final Exam will be given. The Midterms Exams will be held on Monday, October 12, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm and on Monday, November 2, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. The Final Exam is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 2 from 7:00 – 9:00 PM CST. Zoom links and detailed instructions for taking a properly proctored remote exam will be provided as we get closer to the exam dates. -Exam FormatExams will feature multiple choice questions as well as one or more free response sections. For multiple choice questions, you will select a letter answer and submit it on the form provided. Work you do toward the answer will not be considered; only the submitted multiple choice responses will be used to determine your score. No exceptions! As the on-line format of exams may change, additional information about taking the exams will be provided later. While the format, conceptual basis, and syntax of exam problems will often be very similar to the textbook problems, the exam problems will never b e i d e n t i c a l t o t h e t e x t b o o k o r r e c i t a t i o n p r o b l e m s . While all assigned materials are subject to examination, the bulk of the questions are dedicated to mastery of primary topics covered in the course and your ability to solve problems using them. -Practice ExamsWhen possible, prior to exams, practice exams will be published on the Canvas course site.

Exam/Quiz Review After the Midterm Exams and each quiz, a detailed key will be posted to the course Canvas site. You will be able to see all questions worked out in justification of the answers. A histogram and statistics will also be posted so that you can evaluate your performance in the context of the class as a whole. -Multiple Choice Scoring InquiriesWithout exception, multiple choice scoring inquiries should be directed to Program Coordinator Abby Rosensweig at [email protected]. Please do not contact other course personnel regarding the scoring of these multiple choice questions. -Exam Regrade RequestsIf you feel an error was made in grading your exam, you may request that the exam be regraded. Please remember that we may regrade the entire exam when it is submitted for regrading. Should you wish to have the free response portion of your exam regraded, you must: 1. Print, fill out, and sign the Regrade Request form available on Canvas 2. Provide a detailed description of what you think was graded incorrectly. 3. Submit your exam to Program Coordinator Abby Rosensweig ([email protected]) within 2 days from the date on which the exam is returned to you. No exceptions will be made to the established deadlines. Abby will then contact you by email regarding retrieval of your submitted request. -Regrades and Academic IntegrityWe will have scanned copies of all exams. Any alterations made by a student to the original work on an exam will be considered a potential academic integrity violation and will be addressed accordingly.

Recitation -OverviewStudents will meet in smaller sections (12 - 16 students) for either Tuesday or Wednesday recitation sections from 1:00 – 2:50 PM CT in Zoom rooms to be assigned. Recitation sessions will begin on Tuesday, September 22 or Wednesday September 23, depending on your chosen section, and will be held each Tuesday and Wednesday through November 18. These sessions will be used for TA-supervised small group (2 - 4 students) problem solving sessions in Zoom breakout rooms. As the goal of the Chem 110 course is to learn to solve quantitative chemistry problems efficiently, the only way to be successful in the course is to practice solving such problems. A graduate student Teaching Assistant will supervise your recitation section and assist you in solving assigned problems. These problems may come from one of the two assigned textbooks or from other sources. Students may be asked to demonstrate some of the problems solved by their group to the rest of the students in their recitation section. Specific recitation activities will be dependent on the day and the needs of the students but could include review of the previously assigned homework problems, group work on problems assigned at the recitation session, and other activities to improve problem solving skills.

Homework As the goal of the Chem 110 course is to learn to solve quantitative chemistry problems efficiently, the only way to be successful in the course is to practice solving such problems. Homework problems corresponding to the material being covered will be suggested for each chapter covered. These problems may come from one of the two assigned textbooks or from other sources.

An assigned subset of the homework problems will be collected for grading. While the remainder of the assigned homework problems will not be collected or graded, it is essential to practice a wide variety of problems to improve your problem solving skills for quizzes and exam. Assigned homework usually will be due to the super TA (Brendan or Laura as appropriate) during the Tuesday lecture section except in weeks around the midterm exams when due dates have been changed (see detailed schedule) so homework is not due the day after the evening exam. Assigned homework will not be accepted at any time other than during the lecture session at which it is due. Additionally, to receive point credit for a specific assigned homework set, you must attend the recitation session for which you are registered and participate in problem solving including those assigned homework problems

In-Class Questions In addition to assigned weekly homework problems, questions will be posed electronically through the Zoom polling function during most class lecture sessions. Therefore make sure you are logged into the Zoom session with your NU id to ensure you get credit for responding to these polls. The best way to log into the Zoom session will be to use the link within the Canvas course site. These polls form a portion of the grade (maximum 1 point each) to a maximum of 20 points in the total grade.

Study Resources All students are encouraged to take advantage of office hours for questions about lecture material. Office Hours will begin the week of September 22. In addition to office hours that Prof. Northup and the Super TAs will hold, there are other resources from which you can seek help: Chem 110 recitation TAs – and TAs for other general chemistry courses - will hold weekly office hours in the Zoom Chemistry Resource Room. A calendar detailing the TA Office Hour schedule will be posted on the Canvas course site. Please note that these are drop-in help sessions and you may drop in to any session that fits your schedule, not just those staffed by your Chem 110 TA. Drop-in peer-led tutor sessions will be held for students in Chemistry, Engineering, Math, & Physics. Additional information will be posted when it is given to us by ASLA who coordinate these sessions.

Grading The final grade distribution is set by the instructors according to their perception of how the class has performed in learning the assigned materials. The median of the class is the reference point for assigning a distribution of final grades according to total points. Therefore, the reference point for assessing your examination performance is also relative to the class distribution. -Improvement PolicyMany factors may cause a student to struggle early on in the course. Should a student start poorly, but show great improvement in the second half of the quarter, the instructor will consider this improvement when assigning a final course grade

AccessibleNU: Students with Disabilities In compliance with Northwestern University policy and equal access laws, instructors are available to discuss appropriate academic accommodations that you may require as a student with a disability. Requests for academic accommodations should be made during the first week of the quarter so arrangements can be made. Students must contact the AccessibleNU Office for disability verification and for determination of reasonable academic accommodations. For more information, please visit: http://www.northwestern.edu/accessiblenu/

Academic Integrity If you are guilty of dishonesty in academic work, you may receive a failing grade in the course and/or be suspended or permanently excluded from the University. All cases of suspected academic dishonesty are reviewed by the Dean’s Office. Information regarding academic integrity and procedures for handling alleged academic dishonesty can be found at: Student Handbook pgs. 12-15: http://www.northwestern.edu/handbook/handbook.pdf Academic Integrity at Northwestern: http://www.northwestern.edu/uacc/ All students are expected to behave in accordance with the policies outlined on these websites.

Schedule It is unlikely that you will be able to prepare for an exam by trying to learn all of the material the night before the exam. A tentative schedule is provided so that you may read ahead in the textbook in order to be better prepared to absorb course material during lectures. Please note that the schedule is tentative and chapter discussions may finish later or begin earlier than indicated. The topics to be covered in each lecture will be indicated more accurately at the end of the previous day’s lecture.

Zoom Recordings This class or portions of this class will be recorded by the instructor for educational purposes. These recordings will be shared only with students enrolled in the course and will be deleted at the end of the end of the Summer Quarter, 2020 course. Your instructor will communicate how you can access the recordings. Unauthorized student recording of classroom or other academic activities (including advising sessions or office hours) is prohibited. Unauthorized recording is unethical and may also be a violation of University policy and state law. Students requesting the use of assistive technology as an accommodation should contact AccessibleNU. Unauthorized use of classroom recordings – including distributing or posting them – is also prohibited. Under the University’s Copyright Policy, faculty own the copyright to instructional materials – including those resources created specifically for the purposes of instruction, such as syllabi, lectures and lecture notes, and presentations. Students cannot copy, reproduce, display, or distribute these materials. Students who engage in unauthorized recording, unauthorized use of a recording, or unauthorized distribution of instructional materials will be referred to the appropriate University office for follow-up.
