Description

Simple History of the English Language The English Language is a very beautiful and complicated language but did you know that its origins aren’t as beautiful and charming as the language is now. The English Eras is separated into three sections: Old English, Middle English and Modern English.

Old English started to be used around the 450 century which is way back in the day. Now how did the English language start, well it was when all the tribes and empires of the time didn’t want their prisoners roaming inside their kingdom causing havoc and chaos so they would send them off and kick them straight out of the kingdom into an island.

One of those island prisoners were sent off too , started to overpopulate and eventually became a tribe of its own. That island is what we now call England. Back then though they weren’t called England they were called the Anglo-Saxon.

Anglo-Saxon we’re considered low life dirty people. Very rough and just like their language suited them, Old English sounded like you wanted to summon your friendly neighborhood boogie man and not your daughter from her bedroom.

The French Empire was one of the most powerful and refined empires in the world. They eventually took over everything and forced everyone to learn Latin but when they saw the Anglo-Saxon they decided they weren’t good enough to learn Latin.

The French soldiers didn’t mind the Anglo-Saxons, especially the girls who they would marry. But there was a slight problem and that was communication between them as they spoke different languages and couldn’t figure out who ate the cookies.

Worst of all they couldn’t learn each other's languages because the French Empire didn’t permit the Saxon to learn Latin or the French soldiers learn Old English but eventually the languages would mix and English would evolve.

Next came the Monks from Rome who were bringing Christinaity to the Anglo-Saxon. Their language Latin pushed new words into the English language like pope and candle.

After the French Empire lost interest in the Island of Britain another tribe, the Norway or what we know now the Viking decided to start raiding and invading other islands bringing a new language.

Just like the French Empire the viking men fell for the Anglo-Saxon women and just like the French soldiers the language barrier was there and they could not find out who took the last slice of pizza.

A few fun facts, only the rich and famous could learn to write and read. Also only about 30 000 lines of Old English still exist in the world and most of it is from an arthor named Beowulf which we can only speculate on how popular he really was.

The end of Old English was around 1066 but just because it was the end of an era didn't mean it was the end of a language it actually meant it was the start of a new era, the Middle English era.

Now after Norway or the vikings invaded, the Middle English era started. Middle English didnt have that interesting invasion mixture of language like Old English did. The opposite happened. Middle English focused on evolving and refining the langauge.

Say thanks to Middle English because this is when book, writing and grammar really took off. Even though it was still exclusive to the rich to learn to read and write. Lots of more of the common people were starting to learn and English became more diverse.

Also thanks to Middle English and its evolution in grammar and overall language. You now have an English homework and English teacher.

Overall Middle English was a translation period and evolution to what we now call Modern English. A very famous Middle English Arthur is Geoffrey Chaucer. Modern English the pinnacle of the English language or is it? Well it is Modern English is the world language the most spoken and complex.

Not much can be said but a few interesting facts are that William Shakespeare is actually a modern English Arthur even though most consider him an Old or at least middle English.

Also Modern English has a tendency of changing in slang or meaning of words over the decades especially in the youth crowd.

In the end the English Language has gone through a lot to be what we speak now but it nowhere near the finish product as the language is constantly switching and changing we can only hope that in the next 50 years it become even better and not gibberish as some English professor predict....
