Description

As discussed, many trafficked individuals find it challenging to approach legal agents, welfare professionals and authorities. This is due to their fear of authorities, a lack of understanding of their legal rights and limited English language skills. In Richards and Lyneham’s study, only a minority of participating women had sought formal help to escape their situation. Solutions to cultural and linguistic barriers must aim to make it easier for trafficked individuals to approach professional help. To ensure trafficked individuals are aware of the legal rights that apply to them. We must engage with vulnerable communities and employers in high-risk industries to raise awareness about labour exploitation, especially outside urban centres, and improve oversight of employers in high-risk industries. This is achieved by delivering practical training on the indicia of trafficking and exploitation and referral pathways to frontline officers of government agencies. Also, culture sensitivity training should be provided to ensure professionals can interact with trafficked individuals of all cultures. This training should be compulsory and ongoing for child protection workers, police and health workers, and also available as required to community lawyers. Another solution that proves vital is that all written information should be in multiple languages. Furthermore, community law centres must provide access to translators for trafficked individuals. It may prove difficult to do so however we recommend entering into an agreement with a third party translator....
