TBI is defined as an alteration in brain function or other evidence of brain pathology, caused by external force ● Examples: falls, assaults, car accidents, sports injuries Common Themes in TBI Songwriting ● A study analyzed 82 songs written by TBI patients, and most common themes were ○ Isolation ○ Dependency ○ Helplessness ○ Body image (wheelchair, ability to move limbs, expressions) ○ Anger Speech Pathologies in TBI ● Aphasia: cognitively aware of what one wants to say, cannot find the words ○ Goal is to help them find the words they wanna communicate, often use singing to stimulate the production of words ● Dyspraxia: difficulty articulating speech ○ Precomposed songs that have words that have the sounds that are providing most difficulty ● MT and aphasia video: When to Introduce Songwriting ● Depends on the client and how it may be beneficial to them ● For a TBI, it may or may not be appropriate to implement song writing ○ If they’re struggling with cognition and also emotionally, they might not be in a place where they can process the trauma Songwriting Techniques ● Brainstorming: think about themes and words ○ Sometimes you can brainstorm words and a theme will eventually come around or can start with theme and develop words around that ● Fill in the blanks: using a pre-existing song and changing up the words ○ Song has particular meaning to the client and choosing some words to replace with words that have greater meaning to the client ● Song parody: changing all the words but melody remains the same ● Song collage: using pieces of other songs and putting them together ○ Uses visuals to assist Example; Sam TBI (19) ● Train accident, could not remember events prior to the accident ● Physically disabled, speech was impaired, cognition impaired ● Exhibited a lot of anger and behavioural issues ● Skipped or cancelled rehab, was a noncompliant - often comes with impaired cognition

MT suggested songwriting, sam picked heavy metal, allowed others to gain insight into his situation and how he was feeling ● Wrote about the common themes, anger, his accident, his experience at hospital ○ Helped him with expression and validation Example; Sally (12) ● 12 year old girl –struck by a car ● ●
