Athletic Trainer = allied health/medical professional recognized by the American Medical Association ○ Professionals- Certified Athletic Trainers ○ Responsible for all aspects of health care for athletes ○ First people on the field for trauma ○ CAATE Accredited program ■ Master of Science inAthletic TRaining will be new standard by 2020 ○ NATABOC exam ○ State level- licensure, certification, registration, exempt ○ Must be certified by the NATABOC ○ Member of primary sports medicine team ○ Continuing education History ○ Stems from exercise, medicine, PT, PE, sports ○ Began late 1800’s when collegiate and scholastic athletics established ○ First meeting in 1950- established NATA 6 Domains of Athletic Training ○ Prevention ■ If injuries are prevented, no need for further care ■ Includes: ● Physical examinations ● Training and conditioning ● Playing environment ● Equipment ● Guidance ○ Clinical evaluation and diagnosis ■ Evaluation = problem solving ■ Referral ○ Immediate care ■ First person in contact with athlete once injured ■ First aid and emergency care ■ Activate EAP (emergency action plan) ○ Treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning ■ Regain mobility and strength ■ Return to activity ● 2 parts: ○ Design and progress ○ Supervision ○ Organization and administration ■ Record keeping ■ Equipment and supplies ● Inventory
