Training Models in Clinical Psychology

1. The Scientist –Practitioner Model (Ph.D.) - Also known as the Boulder Model - Created in 1949 at a conference in Boulder, Colorado by directors of clinical psychology training programs - Emphasizes both practice and research - Graduates must be able to competently practice (e.g. therapy assessment) and conduct research

2. Practitioner – Oriented Model (Psy.D.) - Also referred to as the Vail Model or Practitioner-Scholar Model - Created in 1973 in a conference in Vail, Colorado - Emphasizes skills in psychological assessment and intervention rather than in clinical research

Most students earn Psy.D. (doctor of psychology) degrees.

3. Clinical Scientist Model - Emerged in 1990’s as a reaction against the Vail Model - Focuses more on training researchers rather than practitioners 4. Combined Professional-Scientific Training Programs - Combined specialty in counselling clinical, and school psychology.  Earning a Ph.D. in the Philippines 1.
