Description

ECE 212 Lab 1: Getting Started with DE1-SoC ABSTRACT The goal of this lab was to learn how to use the development board that will be of importance throughout the course. The lab session also led to understanding and learning how to setup the programming environment properly. I was able to learn about the capabilities of the software required and the development board. The manual was of great importance to help understand the board components and their setup. CHALLENGE AND APPROACH During the session I faced several challenges but was helped by the TA to solve them. The challenges I faced in this lab all revolved around the development board. The first challenge was getting the software to be able to recognize that the USB was plugged in, into the development board and into the PC. Due to this I had to keep on restarting my PC severally and re-upload the code on the development board. After which the software was now able to identify that my USB was plugged in. After which my code uploaded but the there was no output showing on my board. So, I went ahead to do the set up and it worked EXPERIMENT SETUP For this experiment the development board utilize was the DE1-SoC, an Intel (Altera) product. It facilitates interaction between the programming software and the board. For this specific lab the ARM V9 processor and Cyclone V FPGA chip was one of the resources the board provided that I used. Before beginning the experiment, I carefully read through the whole manual to get to know how to set up and operate the board. The other steps beside turning on my board and making sure it was plugged in was to run the Altera Monitor Program. This is the software use to communicate to the development board. I then proceeded to assemble and execute my first program using the ARM Cortex A9 processor

Results and analysis After going through all the guidelines and instructions, I was able to successfully compile and upload my first program to the board. The board was quite easy to use and straightforward. Conclusion By and large, I truly enjoyed in the lab. I had the option to figure out how to utilize the board. In spite of the fact that I confronted a few difficulties before all else, I accept it was an incredible learning experience. The one thing that truly confounded me was the coding language use to execute the program. Yet, over the long run and practice I accept that I will actually want to compose and execute my own program. I'm eager to learn and investigate further.
