Description

Ideas: Apple Pencil Rock (Orange or Yellow) - Would make it look different, not like anything you see in Canada. These are bright colours usually associated with something cheerful. Using this kind of colour would show optimism. Canada Flag (Black) - Would paint the maple leaf black but keep the red borders. - This would drastically change the way we feel about it because we are so used to the red maple leaf surrounded by white, which is well recognized around the world and associated with a country of strength, kindness and freedom. Changing that distinctive symbolic leaf to black could bring question to those traits, maybe associating it instead with shame or dishonour. However, changing the leaf to black may also be seen to represent the cultural and religious diversity of Canada, a ‘deepening’ of the well of people that make up the country. Leaving the borders red may be seen to represent the ongoing existence of freedom, but changing the leaf to black may symbolize the limitations which exist such as the power of the authorities, politicization, racism and stereotyping.

Colour Speaks Assignment

Hayley Verrall For the colour speaks assignment, I have chosen to do the Canadian flag. The Canadian flag is known for its bright red edges and maple leaf in the middle surrounded by white. The colour red gives off a feeling of strength, bravery, and is an overall emotionally intense colour. As you can also see the simple yet well chosen white that borders the maple leaf, shows the nation’s freedom. When I look at the Canadian flag in its bright red colour it makes me feel proud to be Canadian. As the flag is blowing high in the wind you can always tell what it is from a mile away. I decided to change the red in the flag, to the colour black. I felt this was a dramatic change, because no one ever sees a Canadian flag differ from the colour red. Our national anthem is even based off of the emotions the colours give! “Our truth north strong and free.” Black is a very strong colour in the sense that it adds so much weight to a picture. I decided to use black, because when I looked at the flag when I changed the colour it made me feel sad, at what the world is like still today. The colour black gives off a feeling authority or power, and in Canada the government has power, the government has authority. The government makes the rules, and decides our fate. I also felt the colour black showed the racism and inequality that still happens in Canada. But I also kept the white the same in the middle, instead of making it all black, because we are given freedom. The colour white also gives off the feeling of peace, innocence, and honesty. Overall, I believe that changing the colour of the Canadian flag from red and white, to black and white was a great idea, in the sense that we have never seen the Canadian flag any other colour other than red and white. This also could connect with a lot of students, and it connected with me, because Canada is my home. And for those who are not from Canada have now learned more about Canada through the emotion of colours....
