COMM 120 - CH.3: Listening Listening VS. Hearing ➡ Hearing - the physiological response to external stimuli in the form of sound waves.
• Not an active process" • Just happens by being there in the situation ➡ Listening - actively paying attention to what we hear. • Mentally focusing/engaging on what we hear" • A far as gathering information & thinking critically we MUST listen" • Actively engaging w/ the material that we’re hearing" • Listening to speeches" • Focus on the method that the speaker is using to explain their points or maybe their persuading us"
- Look at how they’re supporting their points" - What kind of evidence are they using" - Are they using logic & reasoning to convince "
Four Types of Listening ➡ Appreciative - listening for the pleasure or enjoyment of. • A favorite song that your hearing or the sound or the sound of a person’s voice" • Hearing a poem / excerpt from the book ➡ Empathic - listening to provide emotional support for the speaker. " • Maybe when listening to a friend when their having a bad day" - They have someone listening to them regarding the issues they’re discussing"

• Feelings or emotions" • We’ve actually experienced what the person is feeling & we can relate to them on that level
➡ Comprehensive - listening to understand/comprehend the message. " • EX: listening to a lecture to understand what’s important in the chapter" • EX: At work, your boss is giving you some directions" • EX: Your parents are giving directions regarding certain chores ➡ Critical - listening to accept or reject a message." • At the end of the message the listener is making a decision regarding the message that they heard"
• Better Your Listening - Be an active listener" ‣ Take notes" - Know what to listen for:" ‣ Main points, " ‣ Evidence, " ‣ & technique, view their logic & reasoning" ‣ EX: looking at pictures they provide in their PPT" • EX: When we are listening to someone’s speech, maybe they’re persuading us regarding a certain topic & their giving us information on why we should take a certain action"
• EX: Judges in the courtroom listen to the defendant & the person brought to court"
• MOST important when it comes to public speaking"
“Spare Brain Time” ➡ Our brains process information a lot faster than the rate at which it’s humanly possible to speak. 2
