Description

1-2 Journal: The three Sociological Theories The three sociological theories are functionalist, conflict, and interactive. The functionalist theory sees society as one machine that is built to work together to keep society functioning. It is explained as if social institutions collectively working together to meet individual needs and social needs. The conflict theory states that society is in a constant state of conflict because of competition for limited resources. Society is maintained by domination and power. Those organizations that can keep more resources; use their power and influence to maintain social institutions. The interactive theory focuses on individual social interaction. It simply means that people are shaped by society and society is shaped by people. The common ground for all three theories is that this world is shaped by society. All three groups and the groups and individual that are in each group define what power is, define the meanings of things, and/or define the functions of a particular institution. The three sociological theories are beneficial to us when studying different groups because it gives us an understanding of how a certain group, or an individual react to different things and why they do certain things when a situation arrive i.e. abortion (Sullivan, 2015, pp. 1–3). In contrast for the three theories functionalist and conflict theories are macro approaches and interactionism has a micro approach that focuses on individuals and how they interpret interaction. I identify with interactionism the most. The reason is because I believe people handle situations differently. Since I am getting my degree in human services with a concentration in substance

abuse I want to know why one group wants to escape reality and not deal with life on life’s terms and the other group deals with life on life’s terms and take it for what it is. I have noticed that individuals who has had some type of trauma in their earlier lives run to drugs to quiet the voices and lower the reminders that plague them everyday and other people use those trauma’s to stop generational curses and use them for an advantage for their lives.
