Jasmine K. Frazier December 20, 2020 PSY 255 Professor Marks Comparison of Theorists It is not weird to get totally emotionally invested with a television series or a movie that has captured your attention. Once you really get engaged in any fictional show, it will make you want to ask more analytical questions and you will gain a deeper and better understanding of not only the character but also of the actions and decisions made by this character throughout said series. Within this paper, I will discuss a fictional character called Annalise Keating where I will discuss the demographics, history, presenting problem, analysis of problem, and the alternative analysis of the problem. Demographics Annalise Keating appeared on millions of televisions screens every Thursday night on the hit show “How to Get Away with Murder”. Viewers awaited the weekly return of this hot television show in to be witnesses to a weekly fix of anticipation, anxiety, and mystery from twisted plots and unique story lines. Fifty-five-year-old Viola Davis played the brilliant, powerful lawyer Annalise Keating. Annalise was a Law Professor at Middleton University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Annalise is introduced as a criminal defense teacher who chooses students Laurel, Michaela , Connor , Asher , and to work exclusively in her law firm, where she is helped by Frank and Bonnie (Wikipedia contributors 2020). Annalise and the “Keating 5” got special case studies, and they work

together to solve and get their clientele the justice they deserve.

History Annalise was born Anna Mae Harkness to Ophelia and Mac; Her father Mac was absent most of her life. As a child Annalise had a difficult life since she was sexually assaulted by her Uncle Clyde. Her mother saw the uncle leaving her child’s room and realized what was and had been happening she got her and the children out of the house and set a fire with Clyde inside. In Law School, Annalise met and fell in love with Sam Keating, who at the time was married, but Sam left his wife to be with Annalise ( Wikipedia contributors 2020). Sam and Annalise ended up getting pregnant and one of the clients

that she was dealing with ended up taking a hit out on her, which led to her being in a terrible car accident which causes her to lose their son. Of course, over time Sam started to cheat on Annalise with a girl named Lilah and Rebecca, Wes girlfriend, found out about the affair and was going to expose Sam, so she snuck into Sam Keating office to transfer data and Sam walks in and catches her in the act, and he attacks her, so Wes (One of Annalise students) hit him over the head with trophy killing him. The five burn his body in the woods under Annalise's complicity, who is aware of the murder and helps them to build up an alibi ( Wikipedia contributors 2020). Fast forwarding, the remains of Sam were found, and evidence was showing that Annalise’s lover at the time Nate was guilty his murder because she did not want to have to arrest her students. Fast forwarding, it is revealed that Annalise's funeral take place many years into the future after Annalise has lived a long life with Tegan. Amongst in attendance are Eve, Laurel, Connor, Oliver and Christopher Castillo, Wes and Laurel's son. After Annalise's funeral, Christopher, who was mentored by Annalise throughout his life, becomes the professor

of her old law class which he names How to Get Away with Murder in Annalise's honor. ( Wikipedia contributors 2020)

Presenting Problem Being a lawyer is very stressful and with everything that Annalise was going through from the beginning and dealing with most her caseloads, she was bound to have a nervous breakdown. After dealing with losing one of her students, Wes, Annalise started drinking a lot, basically she was always drunk. She ended up losing her bar license due to being an alcoholic which led her to attend mandatory AA meetings, pop-up urine test and mandatory therapy. On down later in the season, Annalise has had a break down to where she ends up going to a clinic where she breaks down and cries as she tells the group how she has witnessed murder after murder, case after case, and dealing with Laurels and baby Christopher being kidnapped. She had just had about enough and could not handle the pressure anymore. Analysis of Problem How to Get Away with Murder does a superb job of displaying the different and continuously changing dynamics of who Annalise Keating truly is. Keating is a character who is powerful in the public eye but privately vulnerable. Annalise is shown drinking Vodka most of the time and crying a lavish number of tears in her lonesome as a coping mechanism for difficult and stressful situations. Annalise has yet to experience an appropriately balanced relationship with those she has formed intimate and family relationships with. Keating has an endured quite some emotions from most people who have entered her life; really starting with what her uncle Clyde did to her as a child.

According to Freud, “adult defenses are related to early childhood experiences” (Burger, 2019). In the case of Annalise Keating, it all ties together due to the missing support that she did not have from her family. The father was In and out of her life, her mother was there, but she slowly developed dementia. Alternative Analysis of the Problem

Alternatively, Karen Horney delved deeper into what was called ‘feminine psychology’ which presented a valid understanding of what Annalise struggled with. Burger (2019) stated, “According to Horney, children who grow up in anxiety-generating situations develop strategies for dealing with people who are threatening.” Essentially, people learn that dealing with social relationships can cause stress and anxiety. Some even develop a defense mechanism which makes us ward off people who try to get close to us. Annalise felt that she was losing everyone that she loved and who were closed to her, so she felt that firing her “family” (students and friends) that she would not lose them anymore, but sadly that sis not stop the deaths and bad things from happening.
