Compute New Variable SPSS Spring 2020...
How to compute a new variable using existing variables in SPSS: Let’s say you want each participant’s average confidence score across the three measurement points. To compute our variable, we have to: 1. Click on Transform Compute Variables.
2. On the left is a list of all the variables in your data sheet. Move the variables you want to use in the computation to the “numeric expression” box using the arrow. Use the calculator to specify the computation; here, we used the slash to specify division. In the example below, to compute the amount of money per student, we add all three confidence scores and then divide by 3. 3. Name the new variable you are computing (the “target variable”). In this example, we named the new variable “AvConf.”
4. Click “OK” to go back to your data sheet and see the new computed variable. SPSS is first going to take you to the syntax. Our syntax for this operation looks like this: COMPUTE AvConf=(confid1 + confid2 + confid3)/3. EXECUTE.
Go back to your data set and you should see your new variable all the way to the right....
